Acura Integra information:

Introduction

Acura is a branch division of the renowned luxury car making brand Honda Motor Company. The introduction of the brand in 1980s was met with support and success and gained popularity soon in the American market. The plethora of options available within the brand Acura makes for a good buy and customers can choose from among various models one which suits most their needs. The range provided includes sedans including TL, TSX and ILX among others. Acura Integra, one of the famous and reliable models produced by the company is detailed, unique and inspirational. It was sold under different names in different places.

Models

The market of North America knows it as Acura Integra whereas places elsewhere it became famous as Honda Integra. This small, sporty vehicle by Honda was company’s least expensive and smallest model and came as both, a 3-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan. This was developed as a competition to the then hottest model of 1980, Volkswagen Golf GTI, nicknamed “hot hatch”. If this vehicle be defined by Japanese standards it can be known as mid-sized, whereas in the Honda line-up this came near the middle. In the slots it appeared above Honda Civic, Honda Logo and Honda City.

Specs

It became part of the new Acura line-up in 1986, a year after its successful debut in Japan as the Honda Integra. The two configurations in which this model was marketed were as a three-door hatchback (a coupe) and a four-door hatchback (a sedan). The engine becoming powering source for both the variants was a 1.6litre DOHC, high revving 16 valve engine. It was also one of the most alluring features of the model and its publicity garnered much needed positive attention. Multi valve, DOHC engines were not found to be appearing commonly, especially as part of entry level models, hence the interest in this introductory model Acura Integra. The Integra although was based on the less sporty version Civic, it nonetheless featured a small list of changes. These became an aid in increasing the price of the model when compared with CRX Si, the sportiest compact to be then offered by Honda/Acura.

Features

In comparison, Integra had to its credit some positive up gradations, which made for a better choice. The small front disc and rear drum brakes found in the Civic and CRX Si were replaced in Integra by enlarged 4-wheel disc brakes. On a similar level the Integra boasted of a re-worked suspension calibration, tires used were of a better quality and the engine working to power this model was a 16-valve, 113 hp DOHC fuel injected one. This was more updated than the SOHC, 108 hp unit engine employed in the CRX Si model. The four year run of Integra’s first generation saw it selling around 228,000 units. The plush interiors and technology the model offered compensated for a little increased price range than previous Acura models.

The styling was superior and sleek and so was the quality of its interiors. The first generation saw Integra being available with two engines, they although shared same engine code but bore a few differences. They came to be known as “Blacktop” and “Brown top”, owing to the colour of their valve covers. The first generation though still came with its are share of drawbacks, the torque produced was less and it had to be wound up quite a bit in order to make full power. This led to criticism that the model was not exactly apt for day-to-day driving on surface streets but driving on windy and tight roads was more its forte.

Second Generation

The Second Generation of Acura Integra came to the market in 1990 and remained till the 1993. This came powered with a 130 hp, 1.8litre engine, which helped enhance performance of the car. One major change came in the form of discontinuation of its 5-door hatchback as it had over the years not been able to perform well in the market. The 1991 trim levels included RS as base model and LS and GS models. The Third Generation came in 1994 and lasted till 2001. The Acura brand was developed to entice upmarket consumers and so a separate luxury brand by Honda was created. The first model introduced by this brand came to be known as the Integra which was a sporty hatchback. The features incorporated as part of this new beauty emphasised on how Acura’s primary focus was excellence, engineering and bringing to its customers quality. All those in search for cheaper German imports were in for a treat with the debut of Integra as in this model they not only found performance but a product which could be relied upon.

The range of consumers with their demands were catered to by Integra and made a following of satisfied customers. It was a delight for all in search of a vehicle to be used for basic commuting purposes, whereas those on the lookout for just the base and have it modified with higher performance parts were not left disappointed either. Acura released VTEC system to its first model Integra; this was a result of the brand’s experience with Formula 1 racing. The introduction of VTEC to any vehicle in the late 90s was a victory and Integra became only the second car model after the striking NSX to have received it. This innovation by the brand led to the vehicle’s ability to squeeze every amount of power from its small 4-cylinder engine, and even after the process maintain the vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

With the introduction of Integra, Acura and all of Japanese brands proved their capability of being an equally competent automaker and their other abilities of matching globally with standards of other luxury car brands in terms of creature comforts inside cabin, quality and design. The brand Acura works to inspire and stays true to customer’s demands, the designers working for the automaker have built designs and provide ideas such unique and professional that the brand turned out to be a concept driven and competent automaker.
