Acura MDX information:

Introduction

Acura MDX also known as the Honda MDX is manufactured by Acura, the Japanese automaker from 2000 to till date. MDX was produced by Honda from 2003 to 2006 and model years for the Acura MDX was started from 2001 and is now it has entered the present generation. It is a mid-size luxury SUV crossover and it was the first of its segment to have three rows. The MDX denotes “Multi-Dimensional Luxury”. It took over from the low sales SLX modeled on the Isuzu Trooper and introduced as the model for year 2001. The Acura SLX was its predecessor. The current model is the 2014 Acura MDX.

Models and Features

Another SUV based on the Trooper the Honda Horizon was replaced by the MDX in 1999. The MDX was marketed in Australia and Japan from 2003 and another vehicle called as the ZDX, a crossover, in the slot which is upper class to the MDX which appeared like the BMW X6. Three generation of MDX was manufactured from its introduction and was mostly offered in the body style of 5-door SUV. The first generation was produced from 2000 to 2006 where the Acura MDX or YD1 was assembled. It was engineered by Frank Paluch in 1998 and styled by Catalin Matei. It was assembled at the Allison, Ontario, Canada plant and the body style was front-engine with all-wheel-drive crossover SUV. The cargo space doubled as a couple of passenger seats when it is flipped. It was designed to seat 7 passengers but the third was uncomfortable owing to size. The fuel economy of the first generation Acura MDX was better than its competitors of the time.

The second generation spanned the period of 2007 to 2013 where the Acura MDX or YD2 was manufactured. Model years involved were 2007 to 2013 and they were assembled in the same plant as the first generation. They also had the same front engine layout and the all-wheel-drive. It was related to the Honda Pilot and Acura ZDX. The second generation MDX had a longer wheelbase and wider track but visibility at the rear was drastically reduced compared to the first generation. It was unibodied and Advanced Compatibility Engineering was added to absorb collision. It had upgraded engine and the suspension was tuned for the race track. First of the MDX from the second generation was introduced at the New York International Auto Show in 2006 and released in October in the US. A new SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system replaced the older VTM-4 and the SH stands for Super Handling. The all-wheel-drive system was the most updated and advanced of the time and it featured an active rear differential only integrated in high performance vehicles.

The latest Acura MDX replaced the UTE in 2014 and looks lumpier and softer. It also looks less aggressive and its dual exhaust system has been removed from the design. According to Acura the third generation vehicles will not make any compromise with the earlier models. It reportedly runs the lap a pretty chunky 8 seconds faster to its predecessor.

Technical Specifications

The first generation used a powertrain consisting of a 3.5L V6 engines  producing 240hp and 245 lb-ft torque and 265hp and 235 lb-ft and the transmission used was a 5-speed automatic uniformly for all engines. The second generation Acura MDX featured a 3.7 L SOHC V6 VTEC with 3664cc displacement and it had two transmissions to channel power to the wheels, namely a 5-speed automatic between 2007 and 2009 and a 6-speed automatic from 2010 to 2013. The same front engine layout and all-wheel-drive was offered to the range. The latest generation uses a V-6 which is of smaller displacement compared to the earlier models but makes the short sprint in 6.4 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds and this is despite the reduced 290hp of the new 3.5 L V-6, a good 10hp less to last year. The new engine uses a direct injection cylinder deactivation and raises the fuel economy by 3mpg in the EPA rating combined. The 2014 models makes 19mpg overall which happened to be 2mpg improvement over the 2010 MDX.

Options and Packages

The new SUV is 4336 pounds in weight which is lighter than the old MDX and the top of the line MDX of the current models costs about $57, 400. With reduced weight it out speeds any other older model from its clan and weighs 326 pounds less. The SH-AWD has been revised for the 2014 by Acura to sport mode which has boosted the outside rear wheel however it did not improve the performance of the skidpad. The same 0.85g was repeated in the new model. The braking is better and it pulled the car at 178 feet and the pedal feel is also superior. The cabin is quieter whether you are speeding or idling which is an added comfort. Acura is introducing a front-wheel-drive model as a first and for the feeble handed it has also introduced the Integrated the Dynamics System which has a “comfort mode”. When you put the car on the “sport mode” the car makes the home run at appreciable speed. New model can seat 7 passengers and is offered in the 5-door wagon body style.  It is all-wheel-drive and has a direct fuel injection SOHC 24-Valve V-6 with aluminium heads and block. Base price of the car is $43,185 and the top model costing a hefty $57, 400. 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shitting mode has been offered with the engine.

Fuel economy and Safety

Fuel economy of the 2014 model according to the EPA rating is 18 in city and 27 in highway making it a 19mpg observed mile average. This mid-size luxury SUV is rated as “Good” against crashworthiness by IIHS in all aspects. Crashworthiness include small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and seats and head restraints and they have all scored “G” safety rating. A good crossover SUV for a large family and the mile average is not so bad considering its size.
