Acura RDX information:

Introduction

The Acura RDX took over from MDX as the first luxury compact crossover as entry level SUV while the later grew in price and size. It was previewed originally as a RD-X concept at the 2006 New York Auto Show and its sales was started from August 2011. Sales of the 2010 model with power plenum grille of Acura started in August 2009 after it was face lifted.  It also had front-wheel-drive added. The first generation of the RDX was produced between 2007 and 2012 and the second generation from 2013 to till date. First generation RDX was produced in the Marysville, Ohio, and United States plant by Honda and the second generation was made at the East Liberty, Ohio, United States from March 2012 for the 2013 model year.

Technical specification

Acura RDX is manufactured by the Honda’s Acura division and the production has been going on since 2006. It is classified as a compact executive crossover SUV and the body style is a 5-door SUV. It had a front engine layout with all-wheel-drive (SH-AWD) and front-wheel-drive. The engine used for the first generation was a 2.3L K23A1 Turbo I4 and the transmission used was a 5-speed automatic. Dimension of the SUV was 104.3-inch wheelbase, 180.7 inches length, 73.6 inch width and 65.2 inch height. The SUV had a curb weight of 3968 lb or 1800 kg and shared its characteristics with the Honda CR-BV. The 2.3 L had an all-aluminium structure and it was a turbocharged petrol engine. Dual balance shafts and i-VTEC head completed the construction. It was the only SUV that used a 4-cylinder engine. The engine was able to generate a power of 240hp at 6000 rpm and 260lb-ft torque at 4500 rpm.

Acura RDX SUV

Acura RDX has a five-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment which was supported by SportShift sequential manual shift of Acura and activated column mounted paddles in the steering. When you put the paddle shift in the Drive mode it will resume to automatic transmission when the SUV attains the status of steady cruise. When you engage the Sport setting the transmission will become fully manual and it has quicker downshifts and higher shift points. It is also given the SH-AWD (Super Handling All wheel Drive) which can vary the torque distribution according to the road condition the vehicle encounter such as cruising, climbing hill, accelerating, taking a turn or experiencing worse road conditions.

Second generation RDX was debuted in January 2012 at North American International Auto show and it was started sale the same year in the month of April. The engine was changed thus the old four cylinder gave way to the new 3.5 L V6 and it was coupled to a six-speed automatic. It had a great impact on the fuel average. Another change that took place in RDX was the new AWD setup which was simple and less costly over the old SH-AWD system of Acura.

Features and packages

For the RDX leather seating is standard and it can seat 5 passengers. It has automatic climate control, al power featured expected in a SUV and moonroof as standard features. There is a 6-CD changer located in the dash with 7-speaker audio system which can play Data CD and related formats such as the WMA or MP3 files as well as Audio CDs. It is also DVD compatible and the system also includes a 3 month complimentary subscription for the XM Satellite radio. The “Technology Package” offers all that was included in the RL sedan’s interior technology. This highly useful package includes Acura’s latest navigation system, inclusive of rear end camera, real time traffic monitoring by XM Navigation and reviews of Zagat restaurant.  There is a 10-speaker ELS surround sound system included in the package which comes with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound and DTS. It is also audio DVD compatible and you can plug in an iPod to listen to your favorite music. The audio adapter was located in the glove compartment for the 2007 Acura through which you can control the iPod. From 2008 model onward the Honda/Acura iPod Musiclink was discarded because of the hardware problems. From 2010 onwards the standard USB port was integrated which would play the Apple iPod players and other mass storage devices played by USB. It play flash drives containing AAC, WMA6 and MP3 music files while the center console stores the music.

The sound system goes into the mute mode when the driver engages the call via speakers and information of caller and signal can be viewed on instrument cluster. A six foot height flat cargo area can be created in the tail by folding the 60/40 rear seats. Several storage spaces have been created inside the cabin and it includes the center console where you can lock in a laptop. There are six airbags available as standard in the RDX which distributes into dual front airbags, dual side curtain airbags and two front side airbags.

In November 2006 the RDX was crash tested by NHTSA and the result was a perfect rating of “5 stars”. The rating included the front crashes involving driver and passenger, side and front impacts. For rollover the SUV was given a 4 stars rating. The IIHS crash test rating was a “Good” for side impact and moderate overlap. The roof strength was given an “M” (Marginal).
