Chevrolet Astro

Chevrolet Astro

Chevrolet Astro, also known as GMC Safari, is a type of minivan with 3-door body style produced by an American automobile manufacturer, General Motors, in 1985. It was originally made to rival the Plymouth Voyager. The production of this model was discontinued in 2005.

During its production period, the company has created two generations of Chevrolet Astro. The first generation was produced until 1995, while the second generation was produced until 2005. This model is available in many variants, such as passenger van, cargo van, and small conversion van.

The assembly for this model was done in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. It has 3-door body style with front-engine rear-wheel-drive and front-engine all-wheel drive layout, as well as 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, and 5-speed automatic transmission system.

Models and Features

The first generation of Chevrolet Astro was produced in 1985-1995. It has 111 inches wheelbase, with 176-187 inches length, 77 inches width, and 73-76 inches height. It features 8 passenger seats, GM B-Body front suspension and leaf-spring rear suspension, extended body option, hydroboost braking system, Dutch Doors, Scotchgard fabric protection, and CFC-free air conditioning system.

The second generation of Chevrolet Astro was produced in 1995-2005. It has 111 inches wheelbase, with 189 inches length, 77 inches width, and 74-76 inches height. It features various improvements from the original model, such as an extended nose, side airbag for passenger, new dashboard, as well as improvements in the chassis, suspension, brakes, and wheels.

Options and Packages

During the production of the first generation of Chevrolet Astro, the company made several gradual improvements on its model. The 1985 model features 8 passenger seat, rear-wheel-drive, and the standard features available in most minivans at the time, using basic features from Chrysler minivans. In 1990, the company added all-wheel-drive layout for this model as well as a new dashboard. In 1992, the optional Dutch Doors feature was added. In 1993, 4-speed automatic transmission with electric control became the standard transmission system. Then, in 1995, the company added a CFC-free air conditioning system on this model, before it was later replaced with the second generation model.

For the second generation model, there was various improvements from the first generation, but the company didn't modified this model much during its production period. In 1995, the company added extended nose to the model. In 1996, passenger airbag was added with a new dashboard. In 2003, certain suspension components were modified to improve the handling and braking system of the van.

Under the Hood

The first generation of Chevrolet Astro uses three different engines to ensure maximum performance of the vehicle. These engines are 2.5 liters Tech-V inline-four engine capable of producing 98 horsepower, 4.3 liters 4300 V6 engine capable of producing 165 horsepower, and 4.3 liters 4300 V6 engine capable of producing 200 horsepower at 4,400 rotation per minute and 250 ft lb torque at 2,800 rotation per minute. The engine has 101 mm bore and 88 mm stroke, with cast iron block, cast iron head, two valves per cylinder, overhead valve, and 9.2 compression ratio.

The second generation uses 4.3 liters V6 engine capable of producing 190 horsepower at 4,400 rotation per minute and 250 ft lb torque at 2,800 rotation per minute. The engine has 101 mm bore and 88 mm stroke, with LU3 two valves per cylinder, overhead valve, and 9.2 compression ratio.

Though the company no longer produced this model after 2005, there are various modification enthusiasts that are trying to pump up the performance of this van even further. For instance, since the van's engine is based on the small block V8 engine made by GM, they can use V8 engine parts from other models (such as Chevrolet 350) to replace the default engine component of their second-generation Astro. Not only that, the van can also be modified for off-road use, along with more improvements on its suspension, tires, exterior design, and passenger space.

Fuel Economy

The first generation of Chevrolet Astro uses unleaded fuel with 15 miles per gallon fuel consumption rate for urban EPA and 19 miles per gallon fuel consumption rate for country or highway. The fuel economy for EPA highway is 19 miles per hour and 15 miles per gallon for EPA city. The main fuel tank can hold up to 25 gallon. For its fuel system, it has electronic multi-point injection.

The second generation of Chevrolet Astro uses unleaded fuel 87 with 16 miles per gallon fuel consumption rate for EPA urban and 20 miles per gallon fuel consumption rate for country or highway. The fuel economy for EPA highway is 20 miles per gallon and 16 miles per gallon for EPA city. The main fuel tank can hold up to 27 gallon. For its fuel system, it has electronic multi-point injection.

Safety Ratings and Technology

The first generation of Astro received a poor safety rating according to IIHS (International Institute for Highway Safety) for its original model released in 1995. However, the company made good efforts to increase its safety rating for later releases. For the 2000 model, there are some improvements in the safety ratings of the model. However, it is still rated poor on various aspects, such as left leg/foot, overall front, structure/safety cage, and bumpers.

According to another test made by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the 2000 model received three star rating for its passenger model. And for the side impact safety, the car received the highest rating or five star rating according to the test.

However, it is interesting to note that despite a low safety rating, there is low number of accidents recorded with this vehicle.

Trivia:

- In 1985-1989, the company uses both Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari as the model name of this vehicle. Moreover, Pontiac also uses the same name (i.e. Pontiac Safari) and the two Safari model names were available on the same market for four years.

- Although this model is considered a minivan, the size of the vehicle itself is similar with the size of mid-size vans, because the size is larger than common minivans but smaller than large vans.

- Since this model has similar build as a light truck, it can carry up to 2,500 kilograms of weight with the use of the right equipment.
