Dodge Charger information:

Introduction

Dodge Charger an automobile of mid-size, manufactured by Chrysler since the 60s. The vehicle was the result of the automaker’s aspirations to compete in the specialty and personal luxury car segments. Chrysler was eager to join the market and chose Dodge to produce and enter the market with a bigger vehicle that would slot between Ford Mustang “pony car” and the Ford Thunderbird “personal luxury” car. The Chargers manufactured in 1966-1967 were built on the B platform of Chrysler.

Charger offers muscle car for families for whom the coupe no longer fits into lifestyle. There are a multiple choices of engines available where the V6 and V8 engine families take part and also the all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drives are given as choices. The SRT model is an exciting car with a 470hp Hemi V-8 integrated into it and it has adaptive suspension in three modes, launch control among other features. However the Dodge charger engine is one thirsty hunk of metal and the car itself is excess in weight.

Models & Features

The 2014 model Dodge Charger is bigly built and is bold in attitude and this muscle car is a resurrection of the full size traditional American sedan with rear-wheel-drive. The body style is fastback with a scalloped hood but the rear spoiler would remind you of the iconic charger of 1968-1970. This one shares its limbs with the Chrysler 300 luxury car and is exclusively offered in 4-door body styling. For coupe fans there is always the retro styled Dodge Challenger.

There are several Charger models available which include a 3.6 L Pentastar v-6  SE with 29hp  and SXT trims offering 300hp when they come accompanied by different packages. The R/T is capable of 470hp with its 6.4 L Hem V-8. The Chargers have 5 & 8 Speed auto transmission options which a customer can choose and they are mated to the V6. Only five speed transmissions are coupled to V8s though. In the SXT and SRT models the AWD with active transfer and front axle disconnect is optional to conserve fuel. The V-6 in the Charger delivers nice performance of ride and handling and 1100 miles of test driving yielded 20mpg. The R/T equipped with a Road & Track performance package got to the 0-60mph mark in 5.2 seconds and the quarter mile was targeted in 13.8 seconds. EPA rates it performance at 15/25 when the cylinder deactivation technology is applied, but the test car could achieve just 16mpg.

Technical Specifications

The 2011 model was a renewed with sheet metal paneling and the interior has been reworked to be mounted on the Dodge tweaked chassis with components originally sourced from Mercedes Benz. The base engine was a 3.6 L Pentastar V6 generating 292hp. Best choice remained the 5.7 L Hemi V-8 offering 370hp. For the 2012 model a v-6 coupled to an 8-speed auto transmission was offered and with that the blacktop debuted. Zinc cast paddles were added with the Road & Track package of the R/T and with that the heated front seats with ventilated memory was offered. Adaptive suspension, 6.4 L Hemi V-8 with 470hp was the features of the SRT8 Chargers. For the 2013 Charger the SRT8 Super Bee was released in a limited edition in mid year.

The new 2015 Dodge Charger has a new exterior but is not lacking the bad-boy attitude anywhere. For the 2015 model, the inspiration is the 1969 muscle car and it has been given a snug fitting to make the car look a little smaller and also less in weight but at the same time not toning down the muscular appearance of the current sedan. Whether the vehicle is able to make the impression of being lighter or smaller and at the same time muscular would depend on the beholder’s perception. The external dimensions are not changed essentially and so are the chassis except the axle and axle housing made of cast aluminum. The muscular reputation of the 2015 has been kept intact by the 5. L Hemi V-8 from Chrysler and the engine spews out a meaty 370hp and 395lb-ft torque. This powertrain is for the R/T and R/T Road & Track versions and the base versions have been given the 3.6 L offering 292hp and 260 lb-ft. The Chrysler 8-speed automatic transmission is the only one available to both the Hemi V-8 and the V6.
