Dodge Colt information:

Introduction

The Dodge Colt was a sub compact car marketed by Dodge from 1970 to 1994. Similar model was also sold by Plymouth simultaneously during this period as Plymouth Colt and Plymouth Champ. These compact vehicles were actually the product of Mitsubishi Motors and they were sold by Dodge and Plymouth as captive imports. The subcompact was the twins of the Mitsubishi Lancer and Galant families before it became based on the Mirage subcompact of the Japanese automaker. When Dodge Neon was introduced in 1994 Chrysler decided to drop the Colt from its badge, though Eagle Summit, another twin of Mirage continued to sell. Assembly of the Colt took place at Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan and initially it was classified as a compact car for the duration of 1971 to 1979 and later became subcompact and remained so till 1994. A total of 7 Generation of Colts was marketed by Dodge spanning 24 years till it was dropped from the scheme of Chrysler.

Models & Features

The first generation colts were also called Mitsubishi Galant or Mitsubishi Colt Galant was sold manufactured from 1971 to 1973 and was offered in the body styles of 2-door coupe, 2-door hardtop), 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon. A 1.6 L 4G32 I4 was inducted into the compact and was given a front-engine layout design. Wheelbase was 95 inches. In the front it was the McPherson struts and the rear had a live axle. A four speed manual transmission was standard or the first generation colt and optionally 3-speed automatic was offered. The initial power output of the engine was 100hp and later owing to stricter emission laws it was reduced to 83hp. In 1973 a sport model GT hardtop coupe was introduced complete with sport wheels, rally stripes, center consoles and many more features. Chrysler originally intended the Colt to compete with ford Pinto, AMC Gremlin and Chevrolet Vega, but the Colt being of Japanese origin and not a Chrysler automobile, was actually in direct confrontation with the Japanese origin Datsun 510 and Toyota Corolla.

For the second generation Colts the underpinnings of the first generation became the base and the coupes and the sedans of Galant models were given the round shape and the wagons had no such change just retaining its old nose and body. The new Colt had single headlights compared to the previous models and was available in the US with the same old body. Though the Colt retained the old engine an optional G52B Astron was also available for customers. A 5-speed transmission was added for the 1977 models though the three-speed automatic and the 4-speed manual were still in existence.

The sixth generation of the Dodge Colt was a hatchback and it was also known by the name of Mitsubishi Mirage, Lancer, Plymouth Colt and Eagle Summit. Production was carried out for the generation though 1989 to 1992 and the assembly of the hatchback took place in Okayama, Japan and the sedans were manufactured at the Normal, Illinois plant. It was offered in the 3-door hatchback body style and 4-door sedan. The models had the front engine layout and used powertrains that included 1.5L 4G15 I4, 1.6 L 4G61 I4, and 1.6 L 4G61T turbo I4 and the transmission available to the engines included a 3-speed automatic, 4-speed and 5-speed manual. Wheelbase of the models was 93.9 inches, length 158.7 inches, width 65.5 inches and height 52.0 inches.

The 7th generation Colt same as the Plymouth model and also similar to the Eagle Summit specs. As was common for these cars they were badge engineered from the Mitsubishi Mirage and Mitsubishi Lancer. For the North American Market the bodystyle of the two-door coupe was unique because hatchbacks were not popular and there was no concern for more space. The seventh generation did not have a hatchback version of Dodge or Plymouth.  Only the base and GL versions were available originally and the ES model with more sporting characteristics joined the family later.

Dodge Colt was involved in sporting activities and along with other similar cars it was used in rallies both in the US and foreign countries. The events Colt participated along with the variants included the ones that were held from 1970 to 1980. In 1973 it took the third spot in the Sno*Drift rally held for the first time and repeated it second time next year and made the third spot in 1982 for the third time again.

Technical Specification

The engines used for the 7th generation Colts were the 1.5 L and 1.8 L 4-cylinders and the later was used only in the four-door colt versions. The sport version introduced in the 6th generation was not revised but the sporty 2-door ES was given a much more powerful SOHC 1.8 L 16-Valve engine for model year 1994. Larger engine produced 92hp and the bigger engine made a heftier 113hp.  The Dodge Colt was discontinued for the 1994 model year but the Colt Wagon continued to be available for customers till 1996. The Dodge Neon replaced the Dodge Colt after the 1994 model year.

Safety

One of the most irritant features in a car is the radio antenna which used to be the most eligible target for vandals. Ideas like the imbedding of the wire into the windshield from GM were laudable but signal quality was compromised with this arrangement. Mitsubishi came up with the novel idea of integrating the antenna in to the decklid of the Colt. But there were weak links with the Colt and it was pointed towards the rear suspension of the car. When you try something aggressive the rear wheels threatened to come out from the under the vehicle and even during the regular hard cornering there was lot of shuffling back which were not necessary. The front suspension also had its problems. The front tires always divert to some other direction because they seemed to seek the pavement grooves of longitudinal structure. The suspension of the GT was also a potential candidate for the next update. Despite all these shortcomings the badge engineered Dodge Colt survived seven generation and that means that it was liked by the American buyers. The user car ratings for the Colt has been a 3 star out of 5.
