Dodge Durango information:

 Introduction

Dodge Durango was manufactured by Chrysler Corporation under its Dodge division. The initial two generations of Durango was identical and were inspired by the Dodge Dakota. The vehicles featured a body on frame structure and were assembled at the Newark, Delaware plant. Only difference for the vehicles is that the first generation came under the classification of a mid-size SUV where as the second generation came to be as a full-size SUV class vehicle. Durango of the third generation was raised on the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s unibody structure. It is a full size SUV and is being assembled at the Detroit, Michigan plant. The current Durango is refreshed from the 2011 model.

The refreshed 2014 Dodge Durango is upgraded with electronics, a tasteful new interior and is offered with a slicker demeanor than before and not to forget the excellent road behavior. The most significant updates are invisible because it comes from the transmission which is bolted to the rear end from where it dispatches power to wheels. The difference this time over the last model is in the 6th, 7th and the 8th gears.

Technical Specifications

The 2011 Durango version had just a 5-speed transmission and the new transmission the ZF 8-speed automatic is manufactured by Chrysler under license and is finding its ways into the Chrysler line of longitudinally mounted engines. This might prompt you to ask the question, “So what is the difference?”  The current model Durango has the outstanding 290-hp featured in the last model, which happened to be a 3.6 L V6 pumping out a hefty 290hp which is the same DOHC 24-valves engine with aluminium block and heads. How a few additional cogs are going to extract more from it?

The stats of the last Durango fitted with a V-6 coupled to a 5-speed and AWD produced 8.2 seconds for the short sprint of 0-60. And it took 16.4 seconds to achieve the quarter mile at the speed of 88mph. the latest version with the 8-speed significantly reduced the timing by shaving off 0.6 seconds making it 7.6 and the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds speeding at 89mph. The new Durango is 100 pounds more weighty at 5159 lb compared to the last Durango’s 5068.

The refresh did go as far as the chassis because the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s unit-body construction from the body-on-frame transition from 2011 is a solid piece of item which did not require much attention really. The Durango has already impressed one and all with its tactile steering, level cornering approach, comfort of all day ride, solid braking  are the traits which the 2014 model strongly posses. When you talk about vehicles of this size then you don’t use the word “nimble” but the new Durango has remarkable agility on its feet and versatile in direction changing and is more eager to stop at 175 thus shaving off 3 feet achieved by the 2011 Durango from a speed of 70mph. This was hugely lauded by the knowledgeable at that time. This feat is on par with great many mid-size sedan segments and no fade was detected during the operation.

Models & Features

Full sized SUVs are a family transportation compared to elephants and is not praised for their dancing abilities. In spite of being ponderous a vehicle can be better of being agile and the Durango tops the class in this aspect and it involves several front-wheel-drive vehicles like the GMC Acadia. The V-6 with reduced aluminium makes the vehicle lighter and more responsive to inputs from steering wheel and is less heavy on the nose compared to the 5.7 L Hemi V8 driven models. The Durango also tops the class of the three-row SUVs. The renewed styling also conceals the bulk of the vehicle considerably and makes it look more athletic and that is rare in its class. The Dodge crosshair grille is the only drawback with its interpretation of the mesh in the Citadel trim. The LED taillights featured in racetrack style may not appear good but it is definitely a brand signature which is unmistakable. It is an attractive feature to garner attention.

Options and Packages

The appointments found in the 2011 Durango have been updated for the 2014 model. The cabin is refreshed with quality material lining and the color gauge cluster is driver programmable in a 7-inch. You also have the 8.4 inch touch screen located in the center stack and a Chrysler Uconenct infotainment system enhances the connectivity.  The adaptive cruise control of the Durango is a programmable and is endearing particularly. The digital wizards from Dodge have narrowed the minimum-distance preset by tightening it and the vehicle in full auto mode would find the gap of the car ahead significantly less. Another important aspect of the adaptive feature is that you can kill it without switching off the cruise control completely. This is great help for drivers using cruise control to prevent other drivers from exploiting the gap lying ahead in crowded traffic.

Fuel Economy & Packages

However the pricing may go against the vehicle because the base Citadel trim is priced at $44,390 but comes with a lot of goodies like 20” aluminium wheels, 4-wheel drive, bixenon headlamps, navigation, premium audio, power sunroof, heated leather seats, tilt steering, 3-zone climate control and more upgrades. There are more updates available optionally and a fully loaded Durango can go up to 50 grand. Well, this is really costly. Your best bet is to go for lower trim levels with the price bracket of $30k to $33k. If you want a nimble footed SUV that differs from the big boys then this is the one you would go for.

Fuel economy and Safety

The extra gears have significantly eliminated the wide gear spacing and improved the day to day driving and have enhanced the towing capacity to 6200 lb max. It has also improved the fuel economy and fares 17/24 in city/highway ratio compared to the 16/22 of the 2011 Durango. The IIHS safety rating for the 2014 Durango has been a Good for crashworthiness. It includes moderate overlap front, roof strength, side, head restraints & seats. With the tasteful interior provided for this vehicle you are going to really enjoy driving this Durango.
