Dodge Dynasty information:
Dodge dynasty is a sedan with front-wheel-drive released in 1987 and it replaced the 600 in the mid-size segment. Dynasty is not in production as it was discarded in 1993. The car was very popular despite the conservative boxy design of Lee Lacocca even when it had a competitor in more aerodynamically designed Ford Taurus. The car was built on the Chrysler’s C platform and shared the concept with the Chrysler Imperial and Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue. These models were available in the market on an extended wheelbase from 1990 to 1993. Two trim levels were offered for the Dynasty, the base and the LE. The LE models added with a Brougham package during 1992 and 1993 fetched the padded landau roof for Dynasty.
Models & Features
From 1990 to 1993 all Dynasty models were fitted with a driver side airbag. During these years the anti-lock braking of Bendix was also offered with these models. Tamper proof odometer and stainless steel exhaust system was also featured in the 1993 model and it was the only one to have it. Chrysler Dynasty was the name given to the car when it was marketed in Canada and Mexico. This model looked and configured very much like the Chrysler New Yorker Salon 1990 model, which was sold only in the US, and any difference that one can find is in their name. In Mexico only the V-6 engine powered cars were available to the customers. The four-cylinder version, though seldom saw hiked sale figures were also available in Canada. This model reinstates the model Chrysler LeBaron GTS hatchback because Canada’s Chrysler section did not want to market the Monaco which was also the successor of the Diplomat, in 1990. The Dodge Spirit was chosen by Chrysler Canada to replace the 600 though.
Three engines were available for the Dodge Dynasty and they were the Mitsubishi made 3.0 L V6 6G72 engine, a Chrysler made 2.5 L inline – 4 engine and 33.3 L V6 manufactured by Chrysler though the 3.3L was not made available to the Dynasty until 1990. Three-speed automatic transmission from TorqueFlite was available to the 3.0 L V6 and the 4-cylinder versions. The A413 transmission was integrated int to the 4-cylinder where as the 6-cylinders sported A670 transmissions. The Chrysler invented A604 or Ultradrive Four Speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
Assembly of the Dodge Dynasty was brought to a halt in May 1993 when Chrysler decided to replace it with Dodge Neon. The plant where the dynasty was assembled, Belvidere was retooled to manufacture the Neon. The Dodge Intrepid and the Straus occupied the space vacated by the Dynasty. The Dynasty making its appearance in 1988 was a kind of latter-day diplomat raised from the Chrysler New Yorker’s C-body platform. The car was offered just in one body style which was unibody of square shape 4-door. Both the SE and the base model Dynasty had the same wheelbase of 104.3 inches. At that time the standard 2.5 L engine which was incorporated into the Dynasty was relatively weak to the sedan’s weight of 3000 lb with just 96hp. But it had the option of wearing a 3.0 L V-6 from Mitsubishi. The 1989 change for Dynasty was nominal and the engine a V-6 teamed with the Ultradrive automatic of Chrysler generated a slightly increased 150hp.
The 1989 model further had the addition of the driver seat memory feature for two positions, optional security system and disc brake for all wheels with anti-lock. The 150hp Mitsubishi engine was eventually replaced by the 3.3 V6 of Chrysler in 1990 and this the year the Dynasty models received the driver side airbags for safety.
The Dynasty was earmarked as the “contemporary family sedan” and made no effort to become sporty and it was not necessary for the car. The base model sedan priced in the range of $11,500-$12,500 offered great value for the money in the form of a roomy automobile with traditional design and it still attracted people of various kinds and there were many of them. The car was so unassuming and still became the most popular model of the Chrysler line of passenger cars. The 1989 production closed to 138, 000 units which was termed as a great show though many of the orders came from rent-a-car establishments. By 1994 Dodge was relegated to 7th position in terms of car sales and it was passed by Mercury and Chrysler amid chaos turned to more saleable options. By 1996 the company replaced almost all of its models which also included trucks.
The Dodge Dynasty called as the Chrysler Dynasty was in production from 1988 to 1993 till it was replaced but its successor, the Dodge Intrepid. It was classified as a mid-size car and was offered in the 4-door sedan body style. Dynasty had the transverse front-engine layout and a front-wheel drivetrain. It shared the C-body platform of Chrysler with the Chrysler New Yorker. Thorough out its rein the Dynasty models were fitted with 2.5 L K I4, 3.0 litre Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 model and model 3.3 L EGA V6 and the transmission available for these engines were the Three Speed A413 automatic, the Three Speed A670 automatic and the Four Speed A604 automatic from Chrysler. Wheelbase for the Dynasty from 1988 to 1990 was 104.3 inch and from 1991-1993 it remained slightly more with 104.5 inches. Length of the car remained the same throughout its production at 192.0 inches, but rest of the dimensions changed from model years. The width for 1988-90 was 68.5 inches and was increased to 68.9 inches for 1991-93. Similarly the height of 53.5 inch for 1988-90 changed to 53.6 inches for 1991-93.
In spite of its boxy design and conventional styling the Dynasty still managed a sizable customer base for itself. Being a traditional design the sedan attracted huge buyers from the rent-a-car segment and was equally good with people with classic taste. The sedan also withstood the competition from the more contemporarily styled Ford Taurus and carved a niche for itself. It is no more in production but you can still find the used Dynasty models if you are inclined to buy one and there are quite a few numbers prowling the roads n the US. The front impact safety rating has been 4 stars out of 5 for the Dynasty in the used car segment.
