Dodge Intrepid information:

Introduction

Dodge Intrepid was manufactured by Chrysler Corporation from 1993 to 1998 and Daimler Chrysler donned the mantle to manufacture it from 1998 to 2004. Assembly for the car was carried out at the Brampton, Ontario, Canada plant. The vehicle was classified as a full-size passenger car and the body style offered as a 4-door sedan.

The related automobiles included the Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler Concorde, the 300M sedans and Eagle Vision. LH was the code name for the Chrysler platform on which the Vision, Concorde and Intrepid were underpinned. In Canada the Intrepid was sold as the Chrysler Intrepid and it took over from the Chrysler Dynasty earlier marketed sold in Canada. In the United States it took over from the Dodge Monaco as the largest Dodge. It was also simultaneously introduced in Mexico and was badge manufactured as Dodge. At that time the Dynasty was being sold under the brand name of Chrysler and the Intrepid replaced it as a badge engineered Dodge.

Models & Features

Design of the Intrepid dates back to 1986 when original exterior design was aerodynamically conceived for the concept car called the Navajo. The model never took off after the clay model level. It was at that time that Chrysler Corporation had bought the Lamborghini of Italy on bankruptcy and the design of Navajo was revamped and a concept car was added as the Lamborghini Portofino. The automobile was showcased at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1987 as a sport model.  The design became an instant hit and Chrysler decided to build a production sedan, which featured the new exterior design known as the “cab –forward” witnessed in the Portofino. A low and long slug windshield was the hallmark of the forward cab design and it had overhangs which were relatively shorter.  By pushing the wheels effectively to the corner Chrysler was able to spare more cabin space for the passengers which were much larger than its contemporaries at that period.

In the late 1980s the chassis design was started after Chrysler had acquired the AMC (American Motor Corporation). Chrysler was already working on the design of the car which would take the place of the exiting dynasty which was a compact car.  The design initially took off on the Dynasty which later was completely discarded by former Vice President of AMC Production and Engineering, Francois Castaing when he took over in 1988 as Chrysler’s VP of Vehicle Engineering. The new design was started with the Eagle Premier under his leadership.

The first generation of the Dodge Intrepid was introduced in 1993 and the assembly took place at Newark, Delaware, United States and at Brampton, Ontario, for Canada. Powertrains used in these models included 3.3 L EGA V6 and 3.5 L EGE V6 and they were mated to a 4-speed 42LE automatic. Wheelbase of the 1993 Intrepid was 113-inches and rest of the dimensions read like 201.7 inches from 1993-94 and 201.8 inches from 1995-1997, width 74.4 inches and width 56.3 inches without any changes for model years. First generation Intrepid was having a curb weight of 3318 lb. The trim levels offered were two namely the base and the ES. The later was sports trim and was the better equipped. It had four wheel disc brakes, touring suspension damping which was stiffer, better tires encasing the 16- inch wheels. In a rare addition to the times the front seat passenger along with the driver received airbags for safety. Four speed automatic transmission and air conditioning was added to this trim. The optional anti-lock brakes were there and so was the traction control. A very powerful SOHC 3.5L offering 214hp was inducted into the models. Introduction of the Intrepid marked a new beginning for the image of Dodge brand and it started the marketing campaign as “The New Dodge”. Edward Herrmann the actor was the campaigner for Dodge for over a decade.

The first five year production for Intrepid saw several updates including the variable power steering rack dislodging the original in 1994 which allowed the car to be parked easily. The newly tuned touring suspension was also part of the makeup. In 1995 the anti-lock brake was standard on all models, and the Autostick, the manual shift function related to the automatic transmission was borrowed from the Eagle Vision TSi. This was the first time a mainstream passenger vehicle had this transmission. The Dodge Ram logo was inserted in the 1996 model a hoodline exterior treatment was given to the Intrepid and daytime running light with accented in body color. The car was compared often to the Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Lumina and to some extent with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Technical Specifications

The second generation Intrepid was produced from 1998 to 2004 and it was assembled at the Brampton, Ontario, Canada plant. The Inrepids were related to Chrysler LHS, Chrysler Concorde and Chrysler 300M. The engines used for the second generation included 2.7L EER V6, 3.2L V6, 3.5L GJ V6 and 3.5 L EGG V6. A 4-speed 42LE automatic transmission was mated to them uniformly. Wheelbase was 113-inch, length 203.7- inch, width 74.6-Inch and height 55.9-inch.  Curb weight of the Intrepid was 3422 lb. For the 2003 model was given a new 6-disc CD changer in the dash and R/T was discarded in the same year.
