Ford Aspire information:

Introduction

There are some memorable cars from the 90’s but the Ford Aspire is not one of them. This was a time when leaps in technology were rather modest, and the cars strived to serve the very basic of needs. The Ford Aspire was bred from the same line as the Ford Festiva which began production in 1986. It was during its second generation that the Festiva became the Aspire in North America and continued production until 1997 when the last subcompact car was produced. The Aspire is remembered for its great economy, low maintenance and great dependability. Though it was discontinued, Ford has an array of offerings in the same class, most notably the Ford Fiesta.

What’s New for 2014?

There is nothing new for the car in 2014, outside of the optional upgrades you might want to personally undertake. A used Aspire sells for about $2,300 with all the options, and that is being optimistic.

Features

The Ford Aspire was built by Kia for the North American market, but the engine was designed by Mazda. It was available in two and four door configurations, with a base and an SE model being the trim versions available. It is remembered as the first to offer dual airbags as a standard.

Inside the Aspire ticked a 1.3l inline 4 cylinder engine which could only manage 63hp. It is dismal by today’s standards but it was never one built to offer a lot of pulling power. It also came with either a 5-speed manual transmission or automatic, but the latter took longer to accelerate.

The subcompact design of the Aspire told the tale of a minimalist cabin. While that much was true, a tall driver would have easily found the car accommodating as it offered plenty of leg and head room. As for the passengers, it was an entirely different story.

The SE model came with a lot of options, but its sales figures were disappointing, leading to its discontinuation in 1995. All its options were abandoned and what you got was as basic as a car could get. Even the alloy wheels weren’t spared.

Options and Packages

ABS was offered on the Aspire as a standard. The Sporting package in the SE trim brought along the aforementioned alloy wheels, rear spoiler, fog lights, blue-lit instrument cluster with a tachometer, and better upholstery. The base model had very limited options that ranged from rear defrost and wiper, cassette player, automatic transmission and a few comfort packages that were bundled in few interior upgrades.

The 1997 edition of the Aspire received a trivial redesign with new bumpers, front and rear and a better radio. A bigger palette of paint options was also availed. Only the 5-door model came with a power steering and manual transmission as a standard.

Under the Hood

The Ford Aspire was born into a class where performance and sporty handling were subordinated for great economy. The 1.3L inline 4 engine could manage 63hp at best and 74lb-ft of torque. It is the kind of unit that made dashing in and out of the city an easy task.

While the powertrain couldn’t manage brisk acceleration, it did keep the Aspire going for a very long time. Many owners speak with a glitter of satisfaction in their eyes of how their Aspire kept going without any major faults. Reliability ranks high with the car, and the stories of how fathers taught their sons how to drive stick with the Aspire are frequently told. It was a car that was built to last and despite its poor sales, it brought satisfaction to many owners. While that inline four may have been incapable of propelling the car through hilly paths, it did take the hustle out of daily commuting.

Fuel Economy

The figures stood at 34 city/ 42 highway at best. Combined with a driving range of slightly over 400 miles, it is easy to see why the Aspire is remembered for its great economy. The 5-speed manual performed decently too. The automatic suffered from sluggish starts, and despite being offered as an option in both two and four door versions, it was never the most popular. The engine is very undemanding. A routine oil change is all the maintenance a good driver needed to keep this subcompact on the road.

Safety Ratings and Technology

1996 was not a time when automotive technology was developing in leaps and bounds. As such, there wasn’t much that was expected in cars that neither carried a premium badge or sticker price. The Aspire came with driver and passenger airbags and offered ABS as a standard. That was as good as it got. There was no crash test data offered at the time of its review.

The driving experience of the Ford Aspire was not great. It lacked any laudable driving dynamics and was not particularly fun to drive. What the car excelled at was being practical. Cabin space was just enough for a driver of average height, and the fuel economy kept running costs manageable. The interior, while uninspiring was made from durable plastic and the inclusion of dual airbags meant you enjoyed a safety feature not previously available in the class. The reliability of the car was appreciated by the many that got to drive it for many years without incident. Even today, that reputation still endures.

The Ford Aspire was perhaps aspiring for something great as its name suggests. But its lackluster sales saw it pulled off the market barely four years after it was first introduced. The base model lacked many features, and was stripped down to only what was perceived as essential. Coupled with the small interior, poor acceleration and a barely capable inline 4, the future of the Aspire looked bleak from early on. One might argue that the hatchback market had not yet come of age at the time in North America, but this doesn’t absolve the Aspire of its inherent flaws that got it pulled out of the market.

The world may yet forget about this subcompact car line. Its lack of wide mass appeal was its ultimate undoing, despite the promise it might have held for the future. But it perhaps still lives on as it was rebadged as the Mazda Demio which has grown its own success story.
