Ford Windstar information:

Ford Windstar, The Age-Old Question: To Buy Or Not To Buy?

The second series of minivans within the Ford car industry, the Ford Windstar came as a huge transition to the way minivans were going to be produced. Even though the production stopped a long time ago, in 2007, this is still a quite commonly driven car, and it is still able to live up to its original purpose. While it wasn’t as popular during the initial stage of production, it finally reached recognition later on, and is still being used today as well, without many complaints. It was supposed to give a boost of popularity to Ford, and mark the appearance of the very first change they made in their line of production of minivans.

What are the essential features of this minivan?

The transition Ford was hoping to achieve in order to spread their success rates sale – wise, was to have the Ford Windstar designed and crafted with a crucial difference in comparison to the previous minivan series. The rear wheel drive, which was the characteristic of that series, has been changed to the front wheel drive, much similar to the Chrysler minivans, which were the first to introduce that layout within their minivans. Even though it had some strong points, one of the biggest troubles which constantly made the Ford Windstar trail behind some of the more successful brands, such as Toyota and Honda, was related to the engine and the transmission. Clearly, since one of the most important aspects of a car have been compromised, it would be advised to take a close look at all of the available options before deciding to purchase this model, but if you would really like to purchase one, it would be better to look for the recent models, as the older ones won’t be quite as competent.

How flexible is it with the upgrades?

When it comes to upgrades, Ford Windstar can afford to have a very small number of them installed, and they are mostly related to improving performance. There are a few design upgrades available as well.  Overall, you won’t be able to find a large selection of either upgrade packages or individual parts, as the current selection is scarce as it is. The included upgrades worth mentioning are floor mats, camber kits, wind deflectors, brake rotors and headlight covers. As you can see, all of those parts won’t be likely to improve the performance too much, but if you would like to make a small improvement, this would probably be the right step to take.

Is the engine considered to be good?

And now we finally reach the troublesome area. Probably the biggest source of criticism, and the largest problem to be seen in the minivan itself, the Ford Windstar was certainly not famous for its 3L V6 front transverse engine. Made out of cast iron, with the 9.3 compression ratio and two valves per cylinder it was only barely able to reach the 112 kW of power. It uses a multipoint injection electronic fuel system, and as far as the user reviews go, the complaints about the engine are mostly related to it being far too loud, and most notably, the transmission problems have been the most frequent ones to trouble the drivers. In fact, one of the highest rated malfunctions related to the transmission is the complete transmission failure, which seems to be a common sight with the Ford Windstar. This is why other people most likely suggest that you look for another car, as this one can get faulty in a matter of seconds.

Ford Windstar

What about fuel consumption? How much will it spend?

Things certainly don’t get any better in the fuel economy department either for the Ford Windstar. The fuel tank, it is equipped with can hold onto just 20 gallons. This is considered to be fairly low in terms of fuel economy, especially considering how the engine is not really one of the types to save on gas either. Seeing as it spends 17.0 mpg, and the fuel tank is just able to barely outmatch that, constantly buying fuel and getting refills are going to be another issue for potential drivers of this vehicle. At this time it might be a good idea to ask yourself if this is really the car you would like to get. It might have a few good sides, but the bad ones are so glaringly obvious that it might not be worth even considering at all.

Are there at least safety features?

Despite the potential expectations the Ford Windstar doesn’t really get much better in terms of safety. It does have some safety features installed, but that doesn’t make it perfectly safe after all. Luckily, it does have the driver and passenger seat airbags, but that is just about everything this minivan can offer in terms of active safety. It seems that the Ford Windstar was much more focused on passive safety for some reason. That can be noticed with side impact beams, oil pressure warnings, battery warnings, low fuel warnings and low tire pressure warnings. At least the minivan has a front seat belt pretensioner. While these are all some of the features a car should have, an oil pressure warning can’t really do much for you if you get into a car accident. It is safe to say that only the most basic safety measures have been employed here.

Is it even worth buying?

Based on everything we now know about the Ford Windstar, it certainly puts it into questionable position. Is this a minivan worth getting? In all honesty, no. One of the aspects which every car needs to have ensured is the most basic functionality. The Ford Windstar managed to fail that objective, as the rising transmission problems make a serious threat to the entire functionality of the car, making it potentially useless. It’s not like it has some useful features which could make these may negative points look less serious. Not much can be done about any of the above-mentioned issues, so the best course of action you can take at this point is look for a better alternative, and you will surely be able to run into one, at least one which would be better than this. If you are really set on getting this minivan, however, don’t purchase the older versions.
