GMC Envoy XUV information:
An all-new model, the Envoy XUV, is based on the Envoy XL sport-utility which was launched in 2004. This new model was a five passenger seat with the third-row seating area reconfigurable as a cargo hold a la Chevy Avalanche. The XUV has a power controlled, sliding rear roof section as well as its fold-down mid-gate and cargo area suitable for all weathers.
The XUV Extra Utility Vehicle was an attempt to combine the pickup truck and an SUV.
Model and features
XUV features a rear roof section that is retractable. It slides forward, giving way to an open top load area. It also has a 'MidGate' (similar to those of the GMC Terracross concept SUV) which is a solid, panel lined with plastic and a glass partition for the top half that is retractable. This mid-gate can be raised to create a partition between the cargo area and the passenger compartment. There is a two-way tailgate that hinges sideways or drops down. The electronically manoeuvred release handles control the tailgate, making one-handed operation a little easier. The power controlled tailgate glass retracts into the solid tailgate. The XUV cargo area can be easily hosed for cleaning as the cargo area was waterproof and fitted with a drainage system.
XUV come in two styles – the base SLE & leather-lined SLT variants. Some of the standard features common to both styles are power door mirrors, trailer hitch receiver, front windows are powered, remote key less entry, tilted steering wheel. The CD player and radio are the entertainment systems included in the model with 6 speakers. Fully automatic headlights, front fog lights, intermittent wiper are made available for improved lighting and visibility. Both the styles have a ground clearance of 8 inches and an approach angle of 23 degrees as it’s off road capability.
The interiors are not very impressive with the SLT variant in leather upholstery, and maximum of five passenger seats. The rear seat can be split and folded so can the bench in the rear. There is a front centre armrest, dual front impact airbags, leather steering wheel.
Options and packages
The Envoy XUV enjoys an advantage over a pickup truck with a more truck-like configuration with a retractable roof and rear glass that is closed, seals the cargo area, adds a full roof height and is lockable; this makes for an enclosed SUV. When extra hauling capacity is required, the rear seats can be folded down and the Midgate lowered to increase cargo space by 95.2 cubic feet. Plywood sheets of size 4-by-8 can be carried and transported by lowering the tailgate that slides over built-in side rail supports. There are a number of tie-down rings; four of which can be relocated to any of the 12 positions which can further increase the hauling capability of the XUV. The XUV has a disadvantage like a short cargo area and side glass that is breakable.
The cargo area can house wet items too as it is scuff-resistant and weatherproof, it can be hosed out after the mulch is unloaded. XUV's "QuickDrain" system can channel up to 35 gallons of water. The XUV can be driven with the back opened up in the rain, as it can drain the water out of the cargo area. The XUV has a hidden trough and built-in drainage system that empties behind the rear wheels. The XUV has passed rigorous tests that simulates monsoon like conditions.
The SLT variant has leather interiors, power passenger seat; audio controls on the steering wheel as well as in the rear, auto dimming rear view mirror, garage door transmitter, emergency communication system, temperature control are some additional features. Delay-off headlights, temperature display and trip computer are featured too in the SLT variant. The optional four wheel and block heater can be accommodated in both. The rear window defroster is available in the SLT version thus making it an all seasons SUV.
Some other features can be added to both the variants at a price like the compass, outside temperature display, headlight cleaning, two additional speakers or the complete entertainment system, the navigation system, power moon roof, heated door mirrors. The SLT’s trip computer feature, Steering wheel mounted audio controls, Rear audio controls, navigation system, Automatic temperature control, Turn signal indicator mirror and leather upholstery cannot be accommodated in the SLE version.
Under the hood
The XUV model is available in either two-wheel or four-wheel drive with alloy wheels and power steering, and either six- or eight-cylinder engine power with front wheel independent suspension. The both the variants the fuel tank capacity is 22 gallons with four speed automatic transmission. The regular unleaded fuel is recommended for both the variants – SLE and SLT. The standard Vortec 4200 (4.2-liter) engine has six inline cylinders that provide 275 horsepower and a torque of 275 pound-feet which is sufficient to tow up to 5,800 pounds. The variant features 290 horsepower, 325 lb-ft torque, Vortec 5300 (5.3-liter) V8 engine that can pull up to 6,500 pounds.
The V8 engine has the displacement on demand feature which controls the fuel consumption and turns off half of the cylinders to improve fuel economy under light-load conditions. It power train give an average at 11.7 miles per gallon 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
Safety rating and technology
Safety level ratings measure, GMC Envoy had standard four-wheel ABS braking system. Other safety measures in place are the Child seat anchors, Remote anti-theft alarm system, ventilated disc brakes, child safety locks.
Cornering lights, Daytime running lights Front fog/driving lights, Auto delay off headlamps; Dusk sensing headlamps are all for improving visibility.
The XUV has a comfortable ride at the expense of performance. As with other Envoys we've driven, this is an SUV and should be driven with that in mind. When pushed through the curves, it feels soft and lazy, even though it has power steering doesn't help much.
The Envoy XUV design has been well implement and approaches the versatile SUV that offers flexible hauling capability and the cool retracting roof and could have been better.
