GMC Envoy information:

A Mid sized SUV from General Motors was introduced in 1988 and reappeared in 2002 through till 2009. The Envoy was a clone of Blazer from Chevrolet and a high-end trim line of GMC Jimmy.  GMC Envoy was designed on the GMT 330 platform.  It also had extra features not offered on the GMC Jimmy. In 2002 it was completely redesigned and that resulted in an additional size, power and sophisticated modification. The Envoy was over shadowed by its rivals and lasted till the year 2009.

Model and features

The many extra features that were included in the Envoy were a remote trunk release, high intensity discharge headlamps, front seats and mirrors on the exterior plus a Bose audio system.

The Second Gen Envoy still shared Chevrolet Trailblazer platform, its exterior was differently styled even though the interior was similar.

The XL model was a full-sized equivalent to the five-passenger mid-sized Envoy. One unique aspect of the Envoy XL was the usable third row made available, comfortable for a passenger of 6-feet (1.83 m) height. It was longer by 16 inches (406 mm) and had a roofline high enough to allow easy access to the seats in the third row. The standard roof racks concealed the roof. This XL was longer than the Yukon with a short-wheelbase.

Another model was the five-passenger Envoy XUV, introduced in 2004, which was an amalgamation of the pickup truck and an SUV with a retractable rear roof that slid forward. The advantage the XUV model enjoyed was that with a retractable roof and closed rear glass, the cargo area was fully lock-sealed adding advantage of full roof height, thus forming an enclosed SUV. GM discontinued XUV production, due to slow sales, on March 15, 2005.

A luxury trim version of the Envoy was launched in 2005 called Denali available in both the standard-length wheelbase Envoy as well as the Envoy XL options. Features of the Envoy Denali were the bullet pattern grille, a hallmark. The interiors were upgraded with high-end car features like the heated power seats, broad wood-grain trim, along with the windshield wipers that sense rain. The restyled seating increased comfort and provided excellent control while driving.

Options and packages

In 2003, optional features of GMC Envoy included a power moon-roof, differential locking, and a power controlled front passenger seat. Many options were detached by GMC in 2003 from the packages so that customers could save money, pay less and probably increased sales. Other noteworthy changes were the optional front side curtain airbags which were a standard on the 2002 model. The headlight switch was recreated to allow off switch for a Daytime Running Lamp (DRL). The fuel tank capacity was increased to 22 US gallons (83 L).

In 2004, the other optional features that were added are the adjustable pedals, the XM Satellite Radio, and a navigation system that is DVD-based. GMC added some features in 2006, "Stabilitrak," which is a standard stability control, as well as OnStar (standard cruise control), and monitoring system for tire pressure. New alloy wheels of 18 inch size were introduced for the Envoy Denali. DVD navigation system was optional that was based on touch. The front-seat side curtain airbags evolved into full-length side curtain airbags that covered all rows of seats including the third row in the XL model. The Envoy XL was discontinued; the Acadia crossover SUV replaced it in 2007.

Under the hood

GMC Envoy used a 4 speed automatic transmission at 190 HP (140 kW), 4.3L capacity, L35 Vortec 4300 V6 engine till the year 2000 which was replaced.

The Second Gen Envoy the engine implemented was the Vortec 4200 straight-6 that rated at 270 hp (200 kW) and 373 N·m torque. The 2003 model was boosted up to 275 hp (205 kW) and grew further up to 291 hp (217 kW) with a redesign of the Vortec 4200 engine in 2006 model. The disc brakes on all four wheels were included in all models.

The optional rear air suspension offered an isolating ride as well as balanced out the heavy loads in the Envoy. Engine had 6-inline cylinders with 270-291 horsepower (depends on the year) while some other models had a 5.3-liter V8 engine with 300-302 hp (depends on the year). In the Envoy XL model, a new a 5.3 Litre V8 engine was introduced, with 290 hp (220 kW).

Fuel economy

In 2005 beginning, on the Envoy Denali, a displacement on demand 5.3 L V8 was optional. In 2009 Envoy model incorporated the fuel-saving cylinder deactivation in V-8 engine model. The 2009 GMC envoy generated 14 – 15 MPG in the City and up to 21 MPG on the Highway.

Safety rating and technology

Safety level ratings measure, GMC Envoy had standard ABS braking system, front driver and passenger airbags. The Envoy was rated at four stars for both the driver and passenger in the frontal crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2008 models, side-curtain airbags were standard.

Even though the safety measures and features on the Envoy looked updated and state-of-the-art on paper, the SUV was unsuccessful in crash tests and performed badly. The Envoy may still be an attractive and preferred choice; however there are other options in the market that is available that are more refined rivals.

Review

Among all traditional midsize SUVs, the GMC Envoy was overshadowed and got lost in the horde. The Envoy competed well in this segment as it had all the right features, comfortable ride and decent power, however its image seemed to have been tainted by careless handing and less than average interiors in design and materials quality. The Envoy phased out in the 2009 model which was the subject of an emotional HBO documentary - “The Last Truck: Closing of a G.M. Plant”. It is unknown if the Envoy name will ever return with its features.
