Mazda Navajo information:

Mazda Navajo

Mazda Novajo launched in the US market in 1991 is the first ever SUV (sport-utility vehicle) offered by Mazda company and it resembles the Ford Explorer to a great extent. It was primarily manufactured at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant during the time span of 1991-1994. Within this short time span also it bagged the award of Truck of the Year in 1991 from Motor Trend Magazine. This three-door body car offers comfortable four-wheel drive.

Although it resembles the Ford explorer, it differs a lot in exterior trim thanks to its unique taillights, grille, front bumper and wheels. For the interior end it differs mainly for its different design of its steering wheel hub.

Models and Features

Navajo comes in two variants DX and LX. The base version of Navajo offers power windows, power locks and power mirrors as standard features. What creates the difference in LX is an extra interior illumination and an amazing leather-wrapped steering wheel. Air conditioning, stereo system, cruise control, sports seats with power lumbar adjustment and a pop-up/removable moon roof are additional optional features that can be added to the LX model.

In 1992 rear-wheel drive was added which added to the sporty image of Navajo and this was launched as DX model. The year 1993 saw mechanical upgrades in the Navajo with increased power for the V6 engine and four wheel anti-lock brakes. In 1994 the LX model was launched with 5-spoke alloy wheels. In comparison to Explorer the sales of Navada were poor but it was re-launched with a five door body as Mazda tribute in 2000 to 2011.

Options and Packages

Mazda Navajo was having 155-horse power , 4.0 liter engine when it was launched and later upgraded to 160 HP engine in 1993. For the first two years Navajo had rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. Power breaks, power steering , 15-inch wheels and an AM/FM stereo system are the notable features of the DX model that added to its sturdiness and power. The interior was an added advantage over Explorer , however the vehicle was reported to have frequent repair issues for several drivers.

The engine power is good and the car maintains the class and tradition of Mazda, however it is not apt for steep roads, hairpins or speedy drives. The amazing length of Navajo gives its rider a comfortable drive without jostling. It has a push-button four wheel drive system that allows the vehicle to drive even in a snow-fall or pull through between two mountains. There are gas-charged shocks as well as front and rear stabilizer bars in the vehicle that help to maintain its efficiency. Tires specifications for Navajo includes P225/70R15 all-season tires or optional and larger P235/75R15 all-terrain tires. The only disadvantage of larger tires is that it becomes difficult to take turns.

It is easier to bring Navajo to a stop even while driving swiftly because of its rear-wheel antilock brakes. It works awesome even on wet and dry roads and is suitable for all road types and all weather.

Navajo

Fuel Economy

The elegant Mazda Navajo comes with a 102.1 inches wheelbase and is 175.3 inches long. With a 4.0 liter and 155 HP engine it lags the competition in comparison to other Mazda variants like Portege and Miata. Other notable feature of the Navajo engine includes V-6 transmission, 5-speed manual and automatic speed options. Fuel economy of the car is 16 in city -20 at highway MPG at 5-speed. A larger engine would be recommended but it would cost the efficiency which cannot be risked at.

Exterior/Interior/Styling

The exterior of the Mazda Navajo is similar to the Ford Explorer to a great extent. It is a typical two door SUV which was then later upgraded to four door version after poor sales. Interior includes addition of nice touches like instrumentation, side vent windows for rear seat passengers and power door locks.

There is a cup/coin holder provided in the vehicle which provides convenience. Comfort is added by the rear seatbacks that fold forward individually allowing the passengers to haul over. It is easy to load bulky cargo in the vehicle. There are bottom cushions in the sear that fold forward to provide a flat floor and adds to the carrying capacity of Navajo. So if you are looking to travel long journeys then Navajo is your perfect accompany.

It has a 5,000 pound towing capacity and the cargo area can be reached by opening the window or the hatch lid. However the addition of the manual moon roof which has to be removed before using. The rear hatch is also heavy compared to Explorer. Accessories added into the vehicle includes includes AM/FM stereo, power brakes and steering, power windows/mirrors/door locks, intermittent wipers, tinted glass and underbody skid plates. The car is also sturdy and affordable.

Safety Ratings

As far as safety is concerned, just like other Mazda cars , Navajo also takes care of it in the best possible manner. The brakes are pretty solid and works perfectly fine on wet and dry roads as well. It is possible to speed up the car even on stony terrains and uneven roads. Being a heavy car , it is not easy to twist and turn the car on twisty roads. The pedal near the brakes is comfortable to feel. Navajo comes with safe driving guaranteed with amazing driving quality comparable to Explorer with its soft suspension.

Overall the car scored a 4/10 with simple and elegant looks, sturdy body and effective style. However it is not much popular because of the design and too much similarity with Explorer. As far as comfort and value is concerned you can always look ahead to a Mazda Navajo. Safety is another plus point of this 25+ years old car series. It is a apt car for those who are looking for long journeys with lots of baggage and cargo. However newer versions of Mazda or other brands can be a better option with added style and color options.
