McLaren MP4-12C information:

McLaren MP4-12C, or as later know as McLaren 12C is a supercar designed by the British automotive company McLaren. The Number 12 in McLaren 12C means the number of the inside project in the McLaren company and the letter C at the end of it means that the vehicle is built using carbon fiber material.  It’s their first vehicle designed since McLaren F1, which production ended in 1998. Only over 100 units of the McLaren F1 were ever made. So after 13 years, McLaren decided to release a new supercar into the market. The McLaren 12C is produced as a 2 door coupe or a 2 door roadster. Its production began in 2011 and it lasted for three years, until it was stopped in 2014 April. The McLaren 12C was succeeded by a new McLaren product – McLaren 650S. McLaren 650S will have a upgraded bodywork, better engine as well as other kind of technical improvements done to the vehicle. McLaren 12C also uses a number of different Formula 1 technologies, such as the “brake steer” – a system used to stop the rear wheel in order to allow the driver drive around curves more easily. All vehicles airbags as well as the stability control system are up to the standards, so while driving this vehicle, you can feel relatively safe. The key competitors of this vehicle are Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8 V10 and Aston Martin V12 Vintage S. They are fast, prestigious and luxurious vehicles.

Mclaren 12 C

Manufacturer

McLaren 12C is manufactured by British automotive company McLaren. McLaren is manufacturing high-performance vehicles and was created as McLaren cars in 1989 in order to produce of road vehicles that are based on the technology that Formula One vehicles use. So no wonder why the company McLaren Automotive works closely with Formula One constructor  - McLaren Racing.

Specifications of the vehicle and its looks

The vehicle is rather long, it has a 2,670 millimeters wheelbase, it’s 4,509 millimeters long, its width is 1,908 millimeters and its height is 1,199 millimeters. It weighs 1,434 kilograms. McLaren did a lot of work to make this vehicle as light as possible, they adapted the same technology as they used in creating McLaren F1 and used material called carbon fiber, which brings the vehicles weight to its minimum. By the introduction of carbon fiber into a road car, McLaren became the first company to use carbon fiber structure on both Formula One car and in a road car.

Because of the size of the vehicle it might be difficult to get in or out of the car. The vehicle offers a very businesslike cockpit, compared to what its rivals have in the market.  Inside of the vehicle you can find a straight and comfortable driving position, however the steering wheel might appear rather small and relative thin-rimmed, but you must bear in mind that the same sort of thick steering wheels are also used in Formula one, and the McLaren tried to recreate the same experience as if you were steering a Formula 1 car.

McLaren also improved the overall aerodynamics of the vehicle. In order to do so, McLaren implement a new “Air breaking” technology into the vehicle. The rear spoiler of the vehicle pops up to an angle of 31 degrees. It happens so only when the vehicle is under hard breaking and it’s being driven over 59 miles per hour.  Once the wind pushes the lower part down, it increases the angle of the spoiler to 69 degrees. It increases the stability and reduces the stopping duration.

Engine

The vehicle is equipped with M838T 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The engine was created by the cooperation of three different companies, which are: McLaren Automotive, Ilmor and Ricardo plc. The engine produces 600 horse power as well as 441 kilo Watts. When the vehicle was first announced in 2011, McLaren claimed, that McLaren 12C would have the highest horsepower to carbon dioxide emission ratio than any other engine in the world at that time. And the McLaren automotive company proudly claims that the McLaren 12C engine emits the least amount of carbon dioxide per kilo Watt in the world! In 2012 McLaren slightly improved their previously constructed engine, by increasing the amount of horse power from 600 to 625, and the number of kilo Watts rose from 441 to 459. The engine for McLaren is manufactured in Ricardo Shoreham Technical Centre. The engine of the vehicle is connected to a seven speed dual clutch transmission. The transmission is often called as “Seamless shift Gearbox”, that features the “Pre-Cog” system, which allows the driver to preselect the next gearbox, by tapping the paddle. This engine reached 343 kilometers per hour, when the test was conducted by German automotive website SportAuto.de; it can reach 100 kilometers per hour in 2.8 and 150 kilometers per hour in just 6.0 seconds. In can drive a quarter of a mile in just 10.27 seconds. The vehicle is very quick. Also, the car is highly praised for the sound it makes while you are driving it. McLaren modified the vehicles valved sound tube system, so the pipes actually take some of the noise into the cabin; it allows the driver to hear the engine even better.

Rewards and recognition

The car received a lot of praise for its exceptional speed. In 2011 it set a third fastest lap in “Top Gear test track”, which it achieved in 1 minute and 16.2 seconds. In 2012 the McLaren 12C won the Middle East “Car of the Year” as the “Best Supercar” and it was recognized as overall the “Car of the Year” at the Middle East Motor Awards the same year, in 2012.

Types of McLaren 12C

There are three different types of the vehicle built: There’s the convertible McLaren 12 Spider, that has a retractable hard top; McLaren MP4-12C HS, the HS stands for “High Sport”; and the last one is McLaren Can-Am, it’s a track only version of the McLaren MP4-12C, which is based on its GT3 racer.
