Mercedes-Benz 400-Class information:

Mercedes Benz 400 Series

The Mercedes Benz 400 series comes with several options like W124 which was launched in 1985 to 1995 and the later model W210 was launched after 1995. While the former is a mid-sized vehicle the latter is elongated. However it is quite expensive because the car is German made and is of high quality.

There is a separate spring on the front suspension and a rubber top is mounted on the top also while the rear one features the Mercedes multi-link axle which was first launched in the early 80s which resembles the Mercedes 190 and which was then replicated on many latest cars. Most of the cars at that time had self-leveling rear suspensions instead of shock absorbers which were of great use. The car was mechanically enhanced by giving it a bonnet pressurizing pump to improve its performance. Another interesting thing to note is that Mercedes went for a fixed ride height and the car was given rear coil rings for further balance.

Models and Features

The launch of Mercedes Benz 400 was done in 1992 and 1993. The major distinguishable features of the new series was a powerful 4.2-liter V8 engine, which produced 268 hp in 1992 and 275 hp for the 1993 model year. The other notable feature was that it had a long-wheel base with 400SEL. The standard length was 187.2 inches which was extended upto 205.2 with the SEL model. This has added a lot to the luxury making it competent with brands like BMW. Optional features of the 400-class includes anti-lock brakes, power windows and door locks, power seats, airbags, cruise control, rear-window defroster, fog lights, and leather seats.

Options and Packages

The E-class is also fresh on comfort and once you get on the driving seat, you get away from the outside noisy world. The steering is heavy weight and it becomes very heavy to drive and take turns in the traffic the controls do not operate in an effortless manner. It is a reliable drive even in high traffic. This is a slow and heavy car but is amazing on safety standards.

The steering is accurate and provides loads of options to the driver on the screen. The car is not apt for twist and turny roads, stony terrains and steep slopes as well. There are two modes in the car the Sport and Normal mode. In the sport mode the steering is bit heavier but it is essential for the grip along with the speed. However it seems low as compared to BMW 3-series. In the normal mode the steering feels a bit too light and disconnected from the road once you up the pace and, despite having a lot of grip, you don’t enjoy driving fast as much as you should.

Fuel Economy

The car has an engine which is a four cylinder 2.3 litre 8-valve 136 hp (101 kW) unit. The interesting thing is that the C300 4Matic has been enhanced by the manufacturer as it now comes with 3.5L engine which is relatively stronger than before. The car is fuel efficient and has sturdy steering to manage the efficiency. However it is still on the lower side as compared to the S-class.

Exterior/Interior/Styling

Mercedes E-class is a vehicle for rear- or all-wheel drive. The twin-turbo six engine is available in the 400-series instead of eight version. The steering is electrical and is hefty which is manly and gives it a sporty edge. However this makes it slow and little tiredness kind of feeling on creepy and twisty roads. It also puts off the driver’s engagement and reduces the comfort. The car comes with several color options on the exterior as well as interior.

The E-class has an upgraded interior over the C-class. Although the design tweaks were minor and there is not much changes in the appearance, however there are several tech upgrades. With around 24 cameras and radar and ultrasonic sensors in multiple directions it increases the safety and technological power of the car. All these tech savvy options allows the driver to get a bird-eye view of the road and has higher safety for its drivers as well as pedestrians. The seats are comfortable and grand and provide enough space for both front and back seaters. Even the tall people can have enough leg area and the driver seat is made extra comfortable for amazing driving experience. The seats are made up of wood and leather.

 Safety Ratings

The E-series i.e. Mercedes Benz 400 was the safest of all the series. It has most of the safety specifications derived from 190 series and has an angular body which withstands even an offset crash even at the speed of 35mph. The windshield also stays in place and the door opens easily after accident. This version also has a airbag near the driver’s seat and the seat belt is adjustable with greatly improved mechanical features for both front and rear passengers. The pedals are moved inversely and the door arm lays upon the deformable elements to reduce risk of abdominal injury in case of a side crash.

The dashboard absorbs the impact of shock and accident and has artificial foam along with a thin aluminum coating on it which has several advantages like it prevents from overheating, leakage and other benefits like that. The glove box has a rapture which avoids injury for front passengers. The wheels are made of steel which is light weight but has a lot of strength which makes it strong car. Another great thing about this car is that it is one of the first cars with a passenger’s side front-airbag as an option.

Overall the car can be rated as 6/10. Amazing speed and comfort, grand looks and sturdiness are inherited from the typical Mercedes brand. For those whom safety is a big concern then Mercedes Benz 400 is the perfect option. It is a good looking car with easy to drive mechanism and takes care of the safety of its passengers.
