Mercedes-Benz G-Class information:

Mercedes-Benz G-class or G-Wagen as it sometimes call, is short for “Geländewagen”, which translates to cross-country vehicle. It’s a four wheel drive full size luxury SUV. It’s one of the few vehicle to have three fully locking differentials.

Mercedes-Benz G-class vehicle development began in 1972; the main aim of the vehicle was to produce it so that it would have great on and off road abilities as well as maximum safety and comfort. At first it was being manufactured as a military grade vehicle upon request of the Shah of Iran, because he was one of the main shareholders of Mercedes, however in 1979 the civilian model was introduced. The first G model was produced in 1979 and it’s being produced up till now! In some markets Mercedes-Benz G-class vehicle is sold as Puch vehicle and Peugeot P4 is another similar type of vehicle made under the signed license. Peugeot P4 however is only used as a military type of vehicle in France, unlike the Mercedes-Benz one. Shortly its production began in 1972 a Vatican decided to request a custom made G-Wagen, so it could serve as the Popemobile. It was the first Popemobile ever made. G-class vehicles were also used in the fifth film of the Die Hard series called “A Good Day to Die Hard”. It also appeared in “Sex In the City 2” movie.

Models of the vehicle

460 & 461

There are several different models of Mercedes Benz “G-class”. The first one introduced in 1979 is G-Wagen 460. It had three different types of 460 manufactured: convertible, two door wagon and a four door wagon. There were more than 50,000 build in the first decade. Wagen 460 was produced for civilians. In 1979 Mercedes-Benz started producing Wagen 461, who was made as a military type of vehicle; however there are special versions of the 461, which are available even to non-military personnel.

463

In 1990 a new G-Class vehicle appeared, it was the 463 G-class. It was equipped with anti-lock brakes also known as ABS, full time four wheel drive and trio electric locking differentials. Even though the exterior of the vehicle remained somewhat the same, the bulky look of the vehicle was it, like its predecessor before - Mercedes-Benz Wagon 460. The interior however was significantly changed as, it had a little bit of luxury added in with wooden pallets and an option to have full leather seats. The 463 also offers a wider variety of different engines, compared to the G-class 460 or G-class 461.  First G-Class 463 was sold in 1990 and it’s being sold up to this day; however the 463 model was updated a number of different times. The first update happened in 1997, when the power-topped convertible was introduced along with the new engines 2.9L Turbo Diesel and V-6 powered G320.

Mercedes Benz “G-class” vehicles are manufactured in three types of bodies: there are two station wagon versions with two different wheel base lengths: first one is the short wheel base, second one is with the long wheel base, and however they produce G 55 AMG only as long station wagon.

Mercedes G class

In 2005 Mercedes-Benz upgraded the 463 once again. Firstly, the 500 “Grand Edition” models were introduced, that had to mark the end of export into the USA market, the “Grand Edition” had a number engraved inside the vehicle, to mark which vehicle of the series was it. However, Mercedes-Benz continued on exporting their vehicles to USA. Regardless of that, “Grand Edition” were still made available for public to buy.

G-class 463 was upgrade once again in 2006. Then there were three types of petrol engines offered: G500, who had a V8 engine with almost 215 kilo Watts and 288 horsepower. An AMG version “G 55 AMG Kompressor”, V8 supercharged engine with 350 kilo Watts and 469 horsepower and even a more powerful “G 55 AMG Kompressor” with V8 supercharged engine with 368 kilo Watts and 493 horse powers. There were also diesel engines introduced “G 320 CDI” it’s a V6 turbo engine that offers 165 kilo Watts and 221 horse powers.

In 2007 Mercedes-Benz improved its vehicles performance compared to the 2006 upgrade by adding even more power to its engines. “G55 AMG” version had increased its horsepower to 500 and its kilo Watts to 370. Mercedes-Benz also announced that they will continue on making “G-class” vehicles till 2015 because of the high demand from civilian and military buyers. In 2007 they also added new technology into the vehicle such as: reversing camera that was put in there to show the driver the view of the back of the vehicle, this was put in to even more simplify the parking and to reduce the amount of accidents that occur when one vehicle is being parked. Also a new leather option was put in, that increased the number of leather packages from 2 to 3. Cognac colored leather joined up with black leather and grey leather that was previously offered to the G-class vehicle owners.

2008 upgrade improved the technology that was inside the vehicle:  hands free Bluetooth was added, along with optional TV and optional stereo equipment that could reach up to 450 watts. In 2008 a version of cabriolet was also started to be produced, however it lasted only till 2013, when the last version of the “G-Class” cabriolet was introduced called “Final Edition”, which was a limited version of the vehicle. Only 200 of them were produced in the world.

Shortly after, “G-class” Mercedes Benz was once upgraded in 2009. It once again improved the overall comfort ability of the vehicle by adding optimized front seats, leather trimmed dashboard and so on.

Another major upgrade happened in 2012. Firstly, there were some changes in the interior: central console was upgraded; COMAND Online system with GPS was implemented, with ability to actually connect to the internet. The exterior remain somewhat the same: new types of LED lights were added. Also, AMG version of G-class vehicle had new type of radiators put in, along with the Blind Spot Assist system installed.
