Mercedes-Benz S-Class information:

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a class of full size luxury sedans. They are made by German automakers Mercedes-Benz. The first vehicle to be introduced into the S-Class was the W116 S-Class, which was announced in 1972. Even though there were more luxury sedans produced by Mercedes-Benz before the introduction in 1972, the classification was officially introduced with the W116 S-Class. The S-Class was ranked as the world’s best-selling luxury sedan in 2010. S-Class is the English version of German “S-Klasse”. The letter “S” in “S-Klasse” stands for “Sonderklasse”, which translates to a “special class” (in the sense of “a class of its own”). Since the introduction of “S-Class” in 1972, there were six generations of sedans produced!

Mercedes S class

First generation

First generation of S-Class came with the introduction of Mercedes-Benz W116 in 1972. It was the first vehicle to be officially called the S-Class. Its production lasted for 8 years, until it was stopped in 1980. The W116, is also called as 280S/SE/SEL, 350/450SE/SEL, 300SD.  The W116, is a four wheel drive with an independent suspension and disc brakes. The vehicle promoted safety over anything else, which was a groundbreaking decision made by Mercedes-Benz. It had headrests put in, dual windshield wipers to make the visibility during rain easier, easy to access first aid kit and so on.

Second Generation

Second generation of the S-Class began in 1979 when W126 vehicles were premiered by the Mercedes-Benz. Its production began in 1979 and it lasted till 1993. Along with that, there was a coupe version of W126 introduction, it was introduced in 1981 and was produced from 1981 to 1991. W126 replaced the previous S-class model W116. W126 received praise for its improved aerodynamics and enlarged aluminum engine blocks, so in 1981 the W126 won the “Wheels magazine Car of the Year” award. There were over 800 thousand units of W126 sedan sold, along with that there were 74 thousand coupes sold!

Mercedes-Benz once again improved its safety regulations by introducing driver airbags into the W126 in 1981, seven years later in 1988 passenger side airbags were also introduced. W126 had not only improved its safety, Mercedes-Benz also standardized the comfort as well, by putting in heated seats and climate control into the vehicle.

Third generation

In 1991, the W126 series were replaced by a new Mercedes-Benz product W140. The production began in 1991 and they were produced till 1998 by the Mercedes-Benz automotive company.  The vehicle vastly increased its size and featured three different types of the W140:  there two different sedan wheelbase lengths as well as a shorter based W140 coupe. There were produced over 400 thousand of the W140. Mercedes-Benz once again didn’t shy away from the technology and introduced ABS, parking sensors, navigation system with W140. Vehicle is offered with three types of different engines V6, V8, and V12, they can be both petrol or diesel.W140 was a once again a successful Mercedes-Benz product, in 1995 it received a minor facelift, along with the facelift the Electronic Stability Control was put in, a technology that can determine when vehicle is out of control and it’s made to assist the driver in such.

Fourth Generation

In 1998 the fourth generation was introduced and its product W220. The production lasted for 6 years, till 2005. It was a completely different product compared to its predecessor W140. It was smaller in size; however it offered more space inside the vehicle. The new design was more rounded, compared to the sharp one that W140 had to offer. The vehicle became was very elegant and modern in that time. The diesel version of W220: S320 became a very popular model in Europe. W220 offered a wider variety of different engines to its customer, which started from relatively small 3.2 liter, 224 horse power and 167 kilo Watts V6 engines to such an engines like, the S65 AMG sold in 2005 had to offer: a  6 liter 612 horsepower and 456 kilo Watts beast V12 twin turbo motor. It was the most powerful sedan in the world at that time. It could reach almost 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.2 seconds!

Fifth Generation

The fifth generations W221 were produced from 2005 to 2013. Mercedes-Benz once again offered a completely new look, compared to what its predecessor had to offer. W221 was bigger than its predecessor; it had a longer wheelbase and even a more spacious interior than before. The interior was also improved greatly. Its design became more luxurious with a huge navigation screen in the center of the vehicle. Once again Mercedes-Benz tried to show, that it’s a luxurious car and they managed to do so. The vehicle obviously several of comfort and safety equipment built in it.

Sixth generation

In 2013 Mercedes-Benz officially announced their new W222 model, and its production began in 2014. The design kept its predecessors features, however there were new details added in to look this vehicle more modern. The vehicle is produced as a front wheel drive, as a back wheel drive and even as a four wheel drive. W222 doesn’t look very big, because of its exceptional design: the lines that go on the sides of the vehicle don’t make it look that big, as well as the perfectly placed lamps. A large 12.3 inch LCD monitor was placed inside the vehicle, with as little as possible buttons.  The vehicle once again sparks with its luxury and quality. Once again Mercedes-Benz tried to improve the comfort and they did so, by reducing the vibrations of the steering wheel or the pedals to as little as possible, they’re almost next to none. Another interesting feature that this vehicle has to offer, it has a built in car perfume, so your vehicle will always remain fresh. It’s not a surprise that the vehicle once again has a large number of technology put in that increases the comfort as well as safety.  W222 comes closer than any product to actually having a car the ability to drive on its own. The system is capable of steering the wheel for a short period of time.
