INTRODUCTION:

The Oldsmobile Alero came in production during the year 1998 to 2004. This car was a compact one and was manufactured by General Motors under the Oldsmobile division. The production of Oldsmobile Alero started in spring season of 1998 to replace Oldsmobile Achieva. This was the last car under the tag compact which was sold. Its production lasted till 29th April, 2004. The Alero was originally designed as a concept car Alero Alpha. It included a V6 engine which powered the sports coupe featuring many designs which the production saw. The Alero that was sold during those periods was either a sedan with 4-doors or a coupe with 2 doors.

There are no changes in this car as its production was stopped in the year 2004.

FUEL ECONOMY:

The 1999 Oldsmobile Alero used an automatic transmission system with 4 speed. The engine used is a 2.4 liters 4-cylinder engine that works with regular gasoline. The fuel economy ratings are 19 mpg in city and 28 mpg on highway. But for the combined, it is 23 mpg.

STANDARD FEATURES AND OPTIONS:

The Alero made its debut in the year 1999 and replaced the low selling Achieva. It offers two body styles one is coupe and the other is sedan. This car is available in three trim levels: the model GX which is the entry level model, GL a midgrade one and the GLS which stands at the top. Both GX model and GL model has a standard 2.4 liter engine with 4-cylnder which produces a power of 150Hp and a torque equal to 155lb-ft. a 3.6 liter engine with V6 is optional in the model GL and is a standard engine used in the model GLS. This engine produces a power of 170Hp and a torque of 200lb-ft. It was at that time equipped with an automatic transmission system with 4-speed.

Later it offered a suspension package that was tuned to give a sports car feel. Later in the year 2001, manual transmission system with 5-speed was made optional and anti-lock brake system was upgraded. In 2002, 2.4 liter engine was replaced by 2.2 liter engine giving power of 140Hp and torque of 150lb-ft.

Later general motors made prototypes of Alero for testing purpose. The variants of the prototypes were:

Alero OSV- This was a specialty vehicle which was used as an experiment to showcase the parts of the body in the market. This included custom interior, supercharged I4and special of cherry red color.

Alero OSV ll- This was yet another experiment vehicle which included a 3.5 liter V6 engine of LX5 DOHC. The color used was dark green.

Alero442- This was a show car which was based on Alero coupe and was fitted to a body part which was similar to design consideration of Oldsmobile 442. This Alero442 had a unique color for a show car which included white stripe with golden color or white stripe with pink color.

Alero California- This car was built as a custom version of Alero coupe which included features like huge rear wing, sports tire and racing seats. This car was painted in custom graphics and in color of brown and yellow.

Alero convertible-It was car built as an experiment in order to check the possibility that an Alero can be created with a convertible top surface so that it can give more appealing looks to the buyers.

Alero Pace Car- It was manufactured by general motors as their safety cars and featured custom white, blue and yellow color with flag with checkered graphics.

 

SAFETY FEATURES:

The various safety features that this car carried were:

1-      Anti-lock brakes for all the 4-wheels.

2-      Airbags for the drivers and also the front passenger.

3-      3-point safety belts at the front with a provision to adjust height.

4-      3-point safety belts at the rear outboard.

5-      Lap belt at the rear center.

6-      Door locks for child security at the rear.

7-      Traction control system.

8-      Shift interlock for braking and transmission system.

9-      Safety cage in order to protect from side impact.

10- Lamps for daytime running.

The IIHS gave this car a poor rating in the front crash test while a marginal rating for its structural strength.

The crash test report by 2003 NHTSA are:

Coupe model:

1- Front driver seat it got 4 stars.

2- Front passenger seat it received a rating of 5 star.

3- It received a poor rating of 1 star for side driver.

4- 4 star for the passenger seat at the side rear.

5- For rollover it got 4 star.

Sedan model:

1- 4 star for frontal driver.

2- 4 star for frontal passenger.

3- 3 star for side driver.

4- 3 star for side rear passenger.

5- 4 star for rollover.

UNDER THE HOOD:

What you will get under the hood is a 4-cylinder engine with a power of 150Hp which enables smooth functioning and driving experience. The 15-in wheels are redesigned and interior console modified. It is because of the engine that it receives power like never before to the front wheel.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE:

1-      What you will find is that though the interior are ergonomically sound, but they are a bit cheap and this gives a dingy feeling.

2-      It has got a low resale value which is an issue.

3-      You will find its steering system a bit numb.
