Oldsmobile Cutlass information:
This is the car manufactured by General Motors in the Oldsmobile division. This was uni-body car made to look like compact car. This car got its success as an intermediate car having body on frame. Later its production by the year 1980 gave various other models like Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass cruiser wagon and Cutlass supreme. The first Cutlass was designed as an experiment sports coupe in the year 1954. The wheel base it rode was of 110-in and had a fastback roofline. It also got equipped with a V8 engine. The platform of this car was similar to later version of compact F-85.
WHAT’S NEW IN 2014 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS?
The first and foremost thing that you will notice about this 2014 cutlass is that it has a 6-speed transmission. The look has been enhanced than the old models. Engine option is provided and you can choose between 3.8 liter V6 or the V8. The power varies from 185Hp to 278Hp. This car is lot more comfortable and has huge space with a descent visibility. In short this modified car is lot more that what the older version has to offer.
The price of this car starts from $15,617.
The Cutlass uses a power train of 3.5 liter V8 engine with manual transmission system of 3-speed. This gives a fuel economy of 20 miles per gallon in city and 29 miles per gallon on highway.
STANDARD FEATURES AND OPTIONS:
The first generation of Cutlass began its production in the year 1956 as a compact car but later larger cars were also produced with engine which was light weight. The model F-85 had new platform Y-body and used a wheel base of 112-in. This car had front suspension with double wishbone and axle having four links at the rear. All around coil springs were suspended. The engine it used was a new V8 aluminum made and with capacity of 3.5 liter. It gave a power of 155Hp and a torque of 210lb-ft. 3-speed manual transmission system was used. Drum brakes of diameter 9.5 inches was used.
The second generation of Cutlass was during the period of 1964- 1967. This period saw a dramatic change in the feature due to the disappointing sales of F-85. The new F-85 had a chassis with body on frame and a perimeter frame. Wheel base, overall length and weight of the car were increased by 115-in, 203-in and 300lb respectively. Root hydromatic and V8 used in previous model were discontinued and in place of them was used a new small block 5.4 liter V8 engine made of cast iron. It also used automatic 2-speed jet away transmission. These models were restyled and rooflines had extended sail panel.
The third generation saw its rise during the period 1968-1972. There was a vast body change in this year. Both 2-door and 4-door models had different wheel bases. This was to impart better style to the car. This period saw use of semi-fastback roofline having huge rear end. In this period the base model was F-85. Then came the mid-level model named Cutlass S and upper model named Cutlass Supreme.
The fourth generation came in view from 1973-1977. For the period of 1973, cutlass had totally redesigned platform. Rooflines were the same as the other models. This generation cutlass had trim level cutlass supreme, cutlass salon, cutlass vista and the 442. The features these included head rest, unique seat called strato bucket with easy entry and the exit for driver and passenger at the front. Some features were added to salon like updated suspension, reclining bucket seat and radial tires. Standard front disc brakes were used. Later in all the production year minor changes had been done.
The fifth generation cutlass got downsized to short 108-in wheelbase. This was the lighter version of cutlass.
Sixth generation cutlass was produced during the period of 1997-1999 and during this period Oldsmobile cutlass had its name revived. Chrome wheel and leather seats with lower intake manifold gasket were used. Plastic gasket was replaced by metal gasket. Rear seat with split folding was used and it also included power locks.
This car lacks optional seat for child safety but it has got dual airbags at front and Anti-lock braking system. It also includes a feature of running lights at daytime. Door locks at the rear which is child proof is provided in the Cutlass. It is provided with a security system too. This car got the safety rating of 4 star in the front crash test and for side impact test it received a rating of 1 star which was pretty much poor. It claims to be a family vehicle but it lacks several safety features and this is the major drawback of this car.
UNDER THE HOOD:
Under the hood of this car you will find a 3.1 liter V6 engine which gives a power of 150Hp at 4800 rpm and 185Hp at 4000rpm. It uses an automatic four speed transmission system. The interior of this car uses Air conditioning and security system with variable vipers. Split folding seats at the rear and leather upholstery is also there and includes an aluminum wheel. Cruise control, power mirrors and fog lamps are also added and have remote entry which is keyless. The vehicle also adds tilt steering and tinted glass.AM/FM was also there in this car.
WHAT WE LIKE:
1. This car has been loaded with various different equipment giving it family car like feel.
2. The inside of this car is spacious.
3. The power it develops is adequate and is enough to run it down properly.
4. The value for money is excellent.
5. The ride is quite comfortable handling is easier.
WHAT WE DON’T LIKE:
1. This car doesn’t match the features of Accord or the Camry.
2. This car has got a low maintenance but rising gas price.
3. This car has parts which are way too expensive and restoration cost that comes is large.
