From the War Fields to Civilian Usage: the HUMMER Brand
First on the market in 1992, HUMMER was a truck and SUV brand selling the civilian version of AM General's M998 Humvee. The brand was purchased by General Motors in 1998, launching 3 automobiles: Hummer 1 copying the Humvee, H2 and H3 based on the GM platforms. The headquarters were located in Detroit, Michigan.
From Humvee to HUMMER
The Humvee, also produced by AM General, is a military vehicle used by the US military but also by other nations and their various organizations. Its popularity consequent to the Persian Gulf War inspired its production for the civilian market. Marketing and distribution had been the responsibility of GM. The vehicle for civilian use was one of the most versatile of its kind, fit for the daredevils and not only.
The HUMMER concept embraces the wild and the extreme, the challenge. This is a car for exploration, with powerful features and an angular design that's unmistakable. The HUMMER vehicles were made to endure and to travel to the ends of the earth.
The GM Brankruptcy Announcement
Hummers are no longer being made. In 2009, the viability of the brand started being questioned because of the GM bankruptcy. During the same year, a manufacturer in China announced its intentions to acquire HUMMER, but later the bid was withdrawn. The brand had a price tag of $150 million. As sales became unlikely, May 2010 was the moment when the business shut down. The decline was due to increasing fuel prices and a weaker demand for such vehicles.
