A Style Legend and Britain’s Pride: Jaguar
Luxury is the first word to come in mind as the Jaguar name is pronounced. The iconic British brand has survived to this day, having know both good and dark times.
The History before Jaguar
The first Jaguars were seen in 1922 under a different brand and were a rare sight. The responsible company was Swallow Sidecar and its owners were William Lyons and William Walmsley. The bodies were built by Fiat, Austin and more. The real deal appeared only in 1932, but the SS initials were not dropped. That happened only in 1945, when the SS would no longer have positive connotations because of WW II and the Nazi troops. It is when the Jaguar name came into the picture.
During the War and After
World War II got Jaguar to build sidecars again, this time for the army. As the war finished, the XK 120 was launched, a sports car to be the fastest of its time, featured in the Earls Court auto show in 1948. Up top this day, the Jaguar headquarters are in Coventry in Great Britain. However, the main plant hasn't been handling all the stages of production. The chassis and engines were coming from the Standard Motor Company supply. After the saloon cars of the 30's, the company
An Emphasis on Design
The brand made itself known through its finely styled cars that received acclaim and criticism at the same time. To those, there was too much about the glam part, while reliability and performance were not among the priorities. However, the XK could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, which was remarkable. Concerning the looks of the car, its grille became iconic – oval-shaped and slim.
The International Success
XK 120 was Jaguar's first export and marked the first real moment of popularity for the brand. Over 10,000 units were sold. The upgrades, 140 and 150, followed shortly after. During the 50's, the focus was entirely switched to the large saloon cars, which would spark the interest of foreign consumers. A new lineup hit the market, with the first model being the MK ii. For the next decade, the brand's already solid reputation would benefit of the famous E-Type, braking all the records and setting new beauty standards. Its speed was also a reason of intense praise (150 mph). Here are some of the basic innovative specifications for this champion:
overhead cam engine,
4-wheel disc brakes,
independent rear suspension.
Although production was ceased in 1975, the model stays a legend. The coming XJS could not be as successful. Bankruptcy was near, but the company was resuscitated by the Ford tutelage. In 2008, Jaguar was sold to Tata Motors group. Its current lineup consists of luxury sedans: the XJ line, XF, X-Type, S-Type and XK.
