Lamborghini – An emphasis on Stunning and Futuristic Design
The Lamborghini story sounds like magic to most. It involves exoticism, automotive empires and many, many millions of dollars. The brand's creator started as a modest man with great skill in repairing engines, which got him much respect from his colleagues.
An Ambitious Start
The Italian manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini focused on producing luxury sportscars, after he has built a fortune through producing farming equipment and getting involved in the air conditioning and heating business. Owned by the Volkswagen Group and its subsidiary, Audi, the brand kept the name of its founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini. The magnate launched his Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. In 1963, aiming to create a stylish grand touring car – refined, powerful and comfortable – to become a direct competitor to Ferrari's offering. The plant was built near Bologna.
Achieving Success through Engines and Body Design
The successful range of cars was based on the newly-created V12 Lamborghini engine, which was housed by a Scaglione-Touring body. It delivered no less than 350 HP and thus is was named the 350 GTV. The car soon entered mass production and the 450 GT followed, as well as the four-seater 450 2+2. The sales went well for all models released. The Countach, Lamborghini's most famous and spaceship-looking car, was yet to be released. That happened in 1973 and before this, there was the Miura, a car which had no common features with the others. Its beautiful body was designed by Marcello Gandini. Miura looked like a hybrid with its transverse mid-mounted engine.
Lambo's Futuristic Looks
The Lamborghini car designs were beyond stunning. These features some very futuristic lines and the famous swing-up doors. However, such looks had their downsides, and thus the cars were difficult to park, as the rear view was close to nonexistent and the level of interior noise was high.
The brand did get into financial trouble at some point. In the 70's, marked by the oil crisis, the Italian no longer owned his business. Lamborghini soon went bankrupt. Luckily, Walter Wolf, who owned a car racing team, tested and improved the Countach, releasing a new version. When the Mimram brothers took over, the company came up with more novelties – the LM004 and 002, both off-roaders, and the Jalpa. In 1987 though, the brand is sold to Chrysler and later to Audi AG, which designed Murcielago, a glorious comeback. Gallardo and Reventon models were next, sporting a design inspired by jet fighters. The latter exists in 20 units only, each costing over $1,300,000.
