Maybach and the Ended Era of Ultra-Luxury
Maybach cars belong to the European manufacturer Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH and target the luxury segment of the market. Wilhelm Maybach founded the brand in 1909, which is now owned by Daimler AG. Unfortunately, this year it is about to become a thing of the past, with the last vehicle released in 2012 and the official announcement of its closing.
Discovering the True Vocation
The original company started by manufacturing engines – not for cars, but for Zeppelins. It built both petrol and diesel engines. Rail cars were another specialty of the early Maybach Company. Some of its products had served in World War I. The first car, an experimental one, was created in 1919 and 2 years later it was announced as a production car. The opulent cars manufactured during the coming years are now considered classics.
Working in the Service of Others
With the inception of World War II, Maybach made the engines for the Nazi tanks in Germany and later was purchased by Daimler-Benz. For several decades, Maybach hadn't produced a car, and when it had, it was under the Mercedes brand. It was in charge of the Mercedes special editions – the W116 and W108 range.
1997 and the Tokyo Motor Show
Finally, the company gets to present two new models – the Maybach 57 and the 62. The 57S appears 8 years later, featuring a V12 bi-turbo engine and a tweaked exterior. However, the sales numbers were nothing close to satisfactory. Maybach sold only a fraction of what Rolls Royce sold, even though both brands displayed the same price tags.
The Failed Revival
Although the brand was revived in 2002, its only 3000 pieces sold were not enough to make a real comeback. Thus, it was impossible to compete against Bentley and Rolls Royce. After having tried for a decade to make the new plans work, it was decided to draw the line. Even though Aston Martin was appointed to style and engineer the next generation for the luxury division, the sales kept on plummeting and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is about to occupy the empty place starting with 2014. Poor driving dynamic were the reason why customers would prefer other brands to the ultra-luxurious Maybach.
For the record, here is a list of Maybach models of the post-revival era:
Maybach 57 & 62, 2002
Maybach Exelero, 2005
