Mazda is a Japanese automaker, which produces a full line of cars. Mazda began as a Toyo Kork Kogyo Ltd in Japan in 1920. It was later renamed as Toyo Kogyo Ltd; in 1927. Earlier it used to produce machine tools, later it moved to making cars, with the introduction of Mazda Go, in 1931.

It began its car production with the car named Cosmo Sport in 1967, and later started with cars which continue till date, named Pro Mazda.

Mazda became popular for using Wankel type engines in its cars. This USP of the manufacturer helped it to gain export to countries. It started making piston powered and rotary powered engines and these began to be exported to various parts of the world. The rotary modes were good as they had a light weight body thus gained speed comparatively faster to the heavy cars of that time. The cars if this type were R100 and RX series (RX-2, RX-3 & RX-4). It introduced R-360 Coupe in 1960, as its first 2-door passenger car.

On 1962, Mazda began local assembly in South Korea and on 1963 in South Africa. It introduced Mazda 1000 (Family Van) in 1963. Mazda later entered the Canadian market in 1968, and then eyed the American market in 1970. This venture proved very successful for the company, and formed Mazda Motor of America.  It began local production in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand later.

It started with the lightweight RX-7 in 1978 and continued with the modern RX-8. It later formed another lightweight sports car, the Mazda Roadster equipped with piston-powered named as the Miata or MX-5. Introduced in 1989 worldwide, the Roadster has been far and wide credited with reviving the notion of the small sports car after its decline in the late 1970s.

The SkyActiv technology is a technology used in certain Mazda cars such as Mazda6 /Atenza, CX-5, Mazda2 /Demio and 2014 Mazda 3.

Mazda later joined ventures with Ford into a capital tie-up in 1979 .this partnership continues till 2010. It was formed under the administration of Alan Mulaly. Ford held stakes of 8% of Mazda in 1979 and currently it holds 0%. The joint venture was forced upon Mazda owing to the poor financial conditions of Mazda in the 1970s. Mazda from then helped Ford in various works including  developing the Explorer 1991, Mazda sold it as the 2 door only Mazda Navajo. Mazda used Ford’s pick-up truck ‘Ranger’ in its designs for North American market B-Series trucks, which Mazda exported to America from 1994 to 2010.
