The subcompact crossover section is popping like popcorn, and there are entrants like Chevy Trax, Honda HR-V, Fiat500X joined by Nissan Juke, Mini Countryman, Jeep Renegade and Buick Encore to crowd the market. After driving the 2016 Mazda CX-3, we came to the conclusion that this is the vehicle that the others from the segment have to beat.


This can be decided only by a comparison test as it was just the initial impression, and you shall have to wait to know the final result, but we can assure you one thing – the Mazda is really good. First sight shows the CX-3 as a larger CX-5 that is shrunken by the sun, and the design language of Kodo offers a muscular stance and also the premium appearance to this mini crossover. The compact carries a taut appearance with its minimal overhangs, bold character lines, crimped greenhouse and a pronounced snout. This is highly alluring to the eyes when you meet in person.

 In the wheels department the base Sport gets the 16-inch steel wheels, the Touring versions of the mid-level get the same diameter aluminum wheels, and only the Grand Touring versions get the 18-inch wheels which offer the most aesthetics. This CX-3 model can be considered as the forerunner of the things that are likely to be witnessed in the 2016 Mazda 2 and both these two cars share the same platform. The unibody structure which is rigid but still lighter paves a solid foundation, and high-strength steel has been used in 63% of the structure, and more than sufficient insulation has been offer to shut out road noise.

Torsion-beam is fitted at the back while the struts show up at the front and as with all Mazda models of the present, the Skyactive engineering concept has been used in the chassis, engine and transmission of the CX-3. The technology combined all the elements aptly to produce optimum performance and to tell it short, it actually works.

The Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder of Mazda, however, fail to enthrall, and the vehicle fails to inspire when it is coupled to a six-speed automatic possessing an aptly tuned Sports mode. The engine is unable to load the CX-3 with any kind of enthusiasm.  The specially tuned engine produces 146-hp @6000 rpm and 146 pounds of torque per feet @2800 rpm which is less than the Juke with turbocharging but more than the 1.8 Liter engine of HR-V. We were climbing the mountain roads which sufficiently drained the energy of the 2.0 Liter naturally aspirate engine, but the ute is not quick. In our estimation, the short dash would have taken 8.0 seconds, and when you instigate the engine it sounds coarse.

According to Mazda, estimates the CX-3 is going to be the leader in fuel economy for its class, and would offer 29mpg for city roads and 35mpg on the highway, which was for the front-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive variants will offer 27/32mpg for city and highway. The interior is upscale and is comfortable supremely. Estimated base price is $20,000 for Sport, $23,000 for Touring and $25.000 for Gran Touring.
