The HR-V takes its inspiration from the past years and present, and in several ways takes in a lot of best things that Honda has done in the 20th century that include fine suspension tuning, well-decorated interiors, and deeply thought-out details. This 2016 Honda HR-V AWD is another to the growing lineage of twenty-first-century sub-compact utes. 


This micro-ute segment is newborn and shrinking a crossover to twerp size would leave no space for details. You see a flock of them in Nissan Juke, Chevy Trax, Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X and Mazda CX-3.  Out of this mess, the Honda’s baby crossover comes as an economy vehicle clearly. The biggest baby in the segment is the Kia Soul, which sells 10,000 examples a month in the USA and does not offer four- wheel-drive. On the contrary, Honda HR-V chooses elegance by designing the restrained interior as well as exterior without drawing much attention but looking good and significant. The price for the HR-V was not released by Honda but promised that it will be in the range of $20,000 to mid-to-high $20k, for a fully loaded EX-L trim. We tested a similar version, and we are sure that the car should be available at the dealers as you are reading this article.

The HR-V has conventional mechanical details, and it is built on the same platform as the Fit and also assembled along with it in Celaya, Mexico Honda plant. The engine is transverse; a torsion beam is fit in the back, and the suspension at the front is strut-based.  HR-V too conceals the fuel tank under the seat of driver like it is in the Fit and is shrouded in steel plating for protection. But when it comes to size the HR-V is larger and has a 3.2 inches longer wheelbase over the donor vehicle. The overall length increases by 9.1 inches at 169.1 inches. It also oversized both Soul and Juke by more than six inches of length. HR-V is however 10-inches shorter than the ridiculously famous CR-V, its big brother.

When dimensions increase, it also brings in more weight. The EX-L example with four-wheel drive, navigation and leather interior weighed 3098 pounds, which is 465 more than Fit equipped with CVT. This also gives birth to the need of more power increase. Hence, Honda refuses the 130-hp producing 1.5 Liter DOHC four-cylinder of Fit and in place chooses a 1.8 Liter SOHC four-cylinder producing 141-hp. The only Fit engine uses directly injected fuel though both features i-VTECH variable valve timing and lift system of Honda and 16 valves. The engine of HR-V looks less compared to the Juke that has a 1.6 Liter producing 188-hp.

The Honda HR-V AWD is a four-door hatchback design with front engine layout.  Estimated base price is $26,500 and the EX- L example we drove the cost an estimated $27,500. Power is rated at 141hp, and the 1.8 L produces 127 pounds of torque resulting in a 0-60mph timing of 9.5 seconds. The HR-V has a top speed of 117 mph equipped with a continuously variable automatic with the manual shifting mode transmission. Estimated EPA fuel economy figures show 27/32mpg for city and highway, and we got 35mpg overall in our testing.
