Wherever the Nissan Juke goes the expressions off-beat, funky and quirky seems to follow relentlessly.  Well, we can see that the subcompact crossover Juke has high wheel arches and higher beltline as trophies that convey its non-conformist accreditation. The bulbous tailgate, uncertain rear doors, and side glass slivers only make the effect seem a bit more. But you cannot simply brush off the 2015 Nissan Juke SL AWD as a cheap carnival joke.


  If you want to know how seriously Juke is considered by Nissan, then you will see it in the complete revision of the engine offered by its engineers to the 1.6 Liter inline-four of the 2015 model. Increased compression ratio, reshaped pistons, reduced engine weight, and internal friction, and the weight have been reduced by switching to spray coated and mirror finish cylinder bores in place of the iron liners. The inertia of turbocharger is lower, and a new lock function has been added by Nissan in the CVVT control system’s intake side. Further, it has changed to variable pressure oil pump,    low-pressure EGR system fitted to lower the temperature of exhaust gas and a maximized injection performance. Well, you cannot call all these just a   simple tuning.

In spite of these updated hardware, the 1.6 Liter turbo four engine of second generation generates the same power as last time with 118-hp and 177 pounds of torque. The welcoming information is that you can achieve torque peak at as low as 1600 rpm in place the earlier engine achieved it at 2000 rpm. The engine is still a little noisy but better than before, and Nissan quotes that the extra benefits derived are fuel efficiency and lower emission levels. The former has improved by 1mpg in both city and highway, and it stands now at 26/31mpg. When we drive the Juke, we observed 26mpg in mixed driving.

The CVT is the only transmission option available with the Juke, but you can buy the 2014 model that offers the manual with the combination of two-wheel-drive. The example we drove with the all-wheel-drive was quite capable of catapulting the hatchback with 3205 pounds of weight.  The zero to 60mph mark was done in 6.4 seconds and the quarter mile was achieved in 15.4 seconds. This is better than the Jeep Renegade 4x4 fitted with 180hp 2.4 Liter four-banger clubbed with nine-speed automatic transmission timing of 8.8 and 16.8 seconds.

The acceleration is segment leading, but the engine is not the type that would inspire critique or deep analysis. The CVT has gearlike steps integrated into it but still the best way you can achieve maximum performance is select Sports mode, engage the transmission in drive and push the pedal down. In our experience, we felt the CVT slipping while shifting manually at 6250 rpm.

Wheels are made of 17-inch encased in 215/55 Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires,  and lateral acceleration figure yielded 0.84g on the 300-feet skidpad which conveniently beat the 0.78g of Renegade and the 0.80 registered by Honda HR-V with AWD.
