Infiniti founded in 1989 and it is the luxury vehicle division of Nissan Motor Company, the Japanese auto manufacturer. The Infiniti brands of vehicles are sold in 15 countries through 230 dealers all over the world. Its first official entry into North America automobile market took place on November 8, 1989.  The brand’s homeland, Japan will be seeing its first car being marketed in the country in the year 2014, the Infiniti Q50 variant hybrid.

The company has its headquarters in Hongkong and the person who manages the company is Johan de Nysschen, CEO, and Senior Vice President of Nissan Motors. Infiniti Q45 was the first car to be introduced in the USA and it mainly targeted the premium segment of vehicles. This is not in line with the scheme of Nissan because of its mainstream image but the move was partly influenced by the 1985 Plaza Accord. The same time the company’s Japanese rival Toyota had developed their luxury models Lexus and Accura.

The marquee was unveiled with two Infiniti models Q45 and M30. The Q45 was modeled on the JDM Nissan President the second generation car, and had a wheelbase 5 millimeter short platform. The wheel base was matched with the President in 1992. It had a 278hp V8 engine, active suspension offered in the first generation Q45 and four wheel steering. The features included in the car would have made it competitive in the luxury category against the likes of BMW 7 series, Mercedes S-Class, Cadillac Fleetwood ad Jaguar XJ.

The second model to be introduced was a badge engineered Nissan Leopard, the 2-door M30 and it was in production for 3 years as a substitute for the Lexus SC. It had an automatic transmission, and VG30E Powertrain 162hp engine. M30 coupe with a weight of 1,512kg was underpowered and the convertible was even heavier due to the body and chassis reinforcements. The M30 nowhere near resembling the Q45 and had an entirely different interior almost.

No mid-luxury sedan was offered by Infiniti to match the Acura Legend the first luxury car from Japan to North America. Lexus GS joined the Legend later. The Infiniti J30 was the first entry level luxury category car and competed with the Lexus ES revised 1992 model.  It failed to match the Lexus because of its small interior and unconventional styling. It was succeeded by Infiniti I series in 1996 and by the Infiniti G35 in 2002.

The third model appeared in 1991the Infiniti G20 based on Nissan Primera the compact car focused for Europe. A four door coupe the J30 with just one option for the engine was introduced in 1993. The sales for these models were slow and by the mid 90s it was trailing behind Acura and Lexus. QX4 was released in 1997 by Infiniti by modifying the Nissan Pathfinder and it became the mid-size premium SUV by a luxury car maker.

Most Infiniti sedans, coupes and crossover cars are modeled on the Nissan FM platform. Currently the cars that are in production are the Infiniti G, Infiniti M, Infiniti EX, Infiniti FX, Infiniti QX56 (SUV), and Infiniti JX (CUV) and the Infiniti M30, Infiniti J30, Infiniti QX4 (SUV), Infiniti Q45 were discontinued. Infiniti was into motor sports and they were the Red Bull’s title sponsor for the year 2013. The company has also signed up Sebastian Vettel, the F1 World Champion as its global ambassador.
