Kia Motors Corporation, 2nd largest Korean Auto Giant

Kia Motors Corporation a Korean automobile company owned by the Hyundai Motor Company is the second largest manufactures of cars after Hyundai. Kia manufactures a large range of vehicles in passenger cars, SUVs, Vans, Commercial vehicles, Hybrid Electrical Vehicles and concept cars. Hyundai Motor Company owns its 38.2% of the stocks and the company has its headquarters at Seoul South Korea. Its sales were over a 2.7 million vehicles in 2012. 


Kia can be denoted as “come out of Asia” the ‘a’ in Kia stands for Asia and ‘Ki’ in Korean means “to come out”. It is the oldest auto companies in South Korea and it started by manufacturing bicycle parts and tubes by hand. The first integrated motor assembly unit of the company was started in 1973 in Sohari plant. Kia manufactured the Brisa small range of cars till the process was halted by the dictum of Chun Doo-Hwan the military dictator in 1981. The company had to switch over to producing light trucks.


The production of cars started again in 1986 which incidentally yielded only 26 cars but the next year ended with 95, 000 units. The company joined with Ford and produced several Mazda modeled cars for the South Korean market as well as for foreign exports. Kia was introduced to the US market in 1992 as Kia Motors American and expanded gradually ending up with hundreds of dealerships across 30 states and selling 24, 740 units in 2005.


Kia was founded in 1944 and it produces 1.5 million vehicles in a year now and has a network of 13 manufacturing and assembly units spread across 8 countries. It has a huge network of dealers and distributors scattered over 172 countries through which vehicles are sold and serviced. The company has over 42,000 employees on its payroll and earns an annual turnover of $14.6 billion US. It sponsors the Australian Open Tennis and is the FIFA’s official automotive partner. “The Power to Surprise” is the official slogan of the Kia brand.


Kia Motors America is the marketing wing of the Korean brand and it offer a complete range of Kia vehicles through 755 dealers across US and garnered a sizable market share. It was the 8th best selling automobile brand overtaking the likes of Mazda and Chrysler. The first production commenced in the US in 2009 in the Georgia, West Point and 2012Kia Sorento crossover and 2012Kia Optima sedan are built in this facility. Kia made a significant impact on the European Market especially the UK where it suffered initial setbacks with low sales. Once the family car models such as Sedona were introduced the market picked up and Kia ended selling 50, 000 units in 2009 and it was a record. The most popular model was the Picanto which alone sold 17,000 units.


Kia motors also produced military vehicle for the South Korean government since 1976 and has supplied six defense vehicles for the army. Now it is designing a vehicle KM450 modeled after Kaiser Jeep M715 for the South Koran Army. Most of the manufacturing facility of Kia is located in South Korea but it also has manufacturing and assembling in the US, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Slovakia and Russia.


Some of the current models of Kia Motors are Kia Venga, Kia Picanto, Kia Soul, Kia Forte, Kia, Cee’d, Rio, Optima passenger cars, SUVs, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage, Kia Sedona, Kia Rondo and commercial vehicles Kia Granbird. The company has also produced electric hybrid vehicles and concept cars.
