Lexus cars are manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation in its luxury vehicle division. This Japanese luxury car was revealed to the world in 1989, US is being the first country to see it. It has become the largest selling Japanese premium car all over the world. The car is bracketed under 10 top selling global brands to come from Japan and has a huge market of 70 countries across the world.
Lexus cars are headquartered at Nagoya, Japan and have work centers located in Torrance, California, USA, Brussels and Belgium. Lexus is the result of a secret project for a flagship sedan named as F-1 which originated in 1983 and resulted in to Lexus LS in the year 1989. The project further added a number of luxury cars such as Sedan Coupe, Sedan Convertible and SUV model cars. In the year2005 an RX crossover hybrid version surfaced and that opened the way for further hybrid models to the Lexus lineup. An F-marquee performance wing was launched by Lexus in 2007 and the first to make the debut was an IS F Sport Sedan which was further followed by a 2009 LFA Supercar.
Lexus production was centered in Japan only since the car was incepted and had manufacturing and assembly centers in Chubu and Kyushu regions where Toyota had plants at Aichi, Tahara, Chubu, Fukuoka and Miyata. The first car assembled outside of Japan was at Ontario, Canada and it was a RX 330 beginning in 2003. Under the reorganization program that took place between 2001 and 2005 the company operated its own designing, engineering and manufacturing wings which were exclusively responsible for the production of the Lexus line of cars.
Under the global expansion program Lexus started marketing its vehicles outside the USA after 2000s. The company became the first premium car marquee to open a dealership for its country of origin when it launched dealerships in the domestic market in Japan in the year 2005. Lexus subsequently debuted in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe and also expanded to other regions. The production lineups of the vehicles were designed according to each region which hugely reflected in the car model, specifications and Powertrain configurations.
Lexus achieved the sale of 63, 594 LS 400 and ES 250 Sedans for the full year in 1990 in the US and the majority of the sales belonged to the LS. The same year the Lexus cars were exported to the UK, Canada, Australia and Switzerland in a limited way. The year 1991 saw the launch of Lexus’s first Sports coupe model SC400 which has the same V8 engine and rear wheel design configured in the LS400. A second generation ES 300 Sedan replaced the ES 250 which went on to be the top seller of Lexus. By the year 1991 Lexus became the top selling luxury import in the US with sales clocking a tremendous 71, 206 units. Lexus also achieved the feat of being the highest ranked vehicle for quality, customer and sales satisfaction in the J. D .Power and Associates’ observations.
Seeing the popularity it was gaining Lexus raised its price tag over other premium makes being sold in America though it was well under the premium car prices sold in the Europe. The Lexus line up of luxury sedan cars included IS and HS models which were compact, ES and GS models of medium size and the LS flagship full-size cars. It manufactured a range of convertibles and that included the IS C models and sports models in different sizes that are crossover RX, medium size GX, and the full sized LX.
